  • Metabolism, Eating More & Reverse Dieting

Can I stay in a calorie deficit all year?

No. On The WarriorBabe Show, Nikkiey explains that fat loss is seasonal. A cut might last one or two quarters of the year, and the rest of the year goes to building muscle, maintaining and getting stronger. Dieting year-round never gives your body a real chance to build the muscle that changes how you look.

  • Building Muscle After 40

How long does body recomposition take after 40?

One WarriorBabe coach frames body recomposition after 40 as a rebuild of six to 12 to 18 months, not a 30-day challenge. You usually feel changes in weeks one to four, see them in months two to three, and by month six the change is undeniable. Client stories on the show took one and a half to two and a half years.

  • Diets, Fasting & Diet Culture

Is keto good for women in perimenopause?

Not as a long-term plan, in one WarriorBabe coach's view. She says keto can improve insulin sensitivity in the short term, but chronic carb restriction can raise cortisol, which already runs hotter in perimenopause, may slow thyroid conversion, and usually skimps on protein. She scores it 14 out of 30 and prefers a higher-fat, protein-forward macro split.

  • Protein for Women

How much protein should I eat at breakfast after 40?

Aim for 25 to 35 grams of protein at breakfast. Nikkiey calls it a non-negotiable minimum after 40, because estrogen decline makes your body less efficient at using protein, so it needs a bigger dose to trigger muscle protein synthesis. Front-loading protein steadies blood sugar, flattens cravings and keeps energy stable into the afternoon.

  • Fat Loss After 40

Does walking after meals help with weight loss?

It helps, but not mainly by burning calories. WarriorBabe's coaches explain that a short walk after eating helps your muscles pull glucose from your bloodstream with less insulin. That matters more after menopause, when insulin resistance rises. They also link post-meal walks to less bloating, steadier energy and no afternoon crash.

  • The Scale & Tracking Progress

Why do I weigh more the week before my period?

You weigh more the week before your period because shifting hormones in the luteal phase cause water retention and bloat, not fat gain. Nikkiey Stott says the scale is almost guaranteed to rise that week. A WarriorBabe video puts it at about one to two pounds. It's a temporary fluctuation that balances out.

  • Sleep, Recovery & Lifestyle

How often should I take a deload week?

Nikkiey's default is a programmed deload week about every six weeks. Programs commonly use every four, six or eight weeks, depending on training type, intensity, volume and recovery. If your body clearly signals that recovery is falling behind before then, take the deload sooner. The schedule is a guide, not a rule.

  • Menopause & Perimenopause Weight Loss

Can changing my diet help with hot flashes?

It can help, according to the show. On Ep. 207, menopause consultant Hatty McCafferty explains that big blood sugar spikes and drops make hot flashes and night sweats more likely. Eating protein from breakfast on and dropping the sugary-snack pattern keeps blood sugar steadier. Cutting carbs isn't the fix. Which carbs you eat, and when, matters more.

  • How to Get Toned

What body fat percentage do I need to see muscle definition?

Nikkiey says that for most women, visible arm definition starts showing around 22-25% body fat or lower. At 30-35%, the muscle is there but buried under fat, so no amount of tricep work will reveal it. Getting there takes a fat loss phase that preserves muscle, plus strength training to build what's underneath.

  • Hormones & Hormone Health

Why does libido drop in perimenopause?

Libido drops in perimenopause for many reasons at once, not just hormones. On The WarriorBabe Show, Dr. Jolene Brighten points to swinging then falling estrogen, lower progesterone, poor sleep, histamine, pain with sex, insulin resistance, inflammation, stress, body image and relationship strain. Her message: you are not broken.

  • Food Noise, Cravings & Overeating

Can food cravings mean my body is missing nutrients?

Sometimes, according to Nikkiey Stott, but not always. On Ep. 202 she says a chocolate craving could be linked to low magnesium, and intense salt cravings might point to a need for more electrolytes. More often, she sees end-of-day cravings in women who simply didn't eat enough protein earlier in the day.

  • Holidays, Travel & Social Life

Why do I overeat on the weekends?

Weekend overeating is usually a response to over-restriction, not a lack of willpower. Nikkiey explains that when you spend the week being "perfect" in an all-or-nothing way, the weekend becomes your escape, your dopamine hit and your release valve. The more it happens, the more your brain craves it. The fix is balance, not more restriction.

  • Supplements & Creatine

Will creatine make women look bulky?

No. Nikkiey explains that creatine doesn't add bulk or fat. It pulls water into your muscle cells, which can raise the scale 2 to 4 pounds in the first week or two and make muscles look slightly fuller. That's hydration of muscle tissue, and fuller muscles look more defined, not bigger.

  • Consistency & Mindset

What is the difference between a goal and a system?

A goal is the result you want, like losing 20 pounds. A system is the daily process that gets you there. Nikkiey explains that hitting your protein, scheduling your lifts, planning meals, drinking water, getting steps and going to bed on time are the system, and a goal without one is just wishful thinking.

  • Strength Training for Women

When should I increase the weight I lift?

Go up when you can do 12 reps with perfect form and feel like you could do more. Maggie's rule: the last two to three reps of every set should feel hard, not painful. When they stop feeling hard, add a small amount, two and a half to five pounds, and build from there.

  • Macros & Macro Tracking

How often should I adjust my macros?

Give new macros at least three to four weeks before changing anything, one WarriorBabe coach says, and often longer. Some women run the same numbers for eight to 16 weeks. Adjust when progress actually stalls, using small cuts of about 125 to 200 calories from carbs and fats. In maintenance, Nikkiey raises intake every one to two weeks.

  • Metabolism, Eating More & Reverse Dieting

Can you lose fat while eating at maintenance calories?

Yes, for many women over 40. Nikkiey explains that eating at maintenance while strength training lets you build muscle and slowly lose body fat at the same time, a slight recomp. WarriorBabe clients have lost weight this way without ever doing a cut. If you have 30-plus pounds to lose, she says a cutting phase may fit better.

  • Building Muscle After 40

Can you build muscle at 70?

Yes. The WarriorBabe Show features two 70-year-old women doing exactly that. Peggy's scale shows about four pounds more muscle, and she carries her 11-foot paddleboard to the lake alone. Julie, who has two partial knee replacements and scoliosis, gained muscle and strength in four months by lifting weights and eating more food.

  • Diets, Fasting & Diet Culture

What are the best carbs to eat for fat loss after 40?

WarriorBabe's coaches say the best carbs for fat loss after 40 are mostly slow-digesting, complex ones: oats, sweet potatoes, brown rice or quinoa, sprouted grain or sourdough bread, and lentil or chickpea pasta. If whole grains bloat you, white rice or cream of rice work well around workouts. No carb is banned; just make complex carbs the majority.

  • Protein for Women

Should I hit my protein goal or my calorie goal if I can't do both?

It depends on your phase. On The WarriorBabe Show, the advice is that in a fat-loss cut you stay close to your calorie target, and if you go over on anything, let it be protein to protect muscle. In maintenance or a build phase, prioritize protein and follow your hunger cues.

  • Fat Loss After 40

Why does fat loss stall during a long calorie deficit?

Fat loss stalls in a long deficit because your body adapts to protect itself. Nikkiey explains that your metabolism slows, everyday movement drops, ghrelin rises, leptin falls and performance declines. The longer you stay in a cut, the stronger these adaptations get. A stall is your body adjusting, not proof the plan stopped working or that you failed.

  • The Scale & Tracking Progress

Are scales that measure body fat accurate?

No. Nikkiey says the body fat numbers on these scales are not accurate. If you use one consistently, though, the trend can still show whether you're progressing. For a truer reading she points to an InBody scan or a DEXA scan, plus progress pictures, measured the same way every time.

  • Sleep, Recovery & Lifestyle

Is it bad to work out in the evening?

Not necessarily. Nikkiey says it depends on you and where your cortisol is. Morning or afternoon training can help regulate sleep, and for some women who feel tired and wired, evening exercise may help. Intense workouts right before bed may have the opposite effect. The best time fits your body and your day.

  • Menopause & Perimenopause Weight Loss

Does alcohol make menopause belly fat worse?

Yes. One WarriorBabe coach explains that alcohol can make menopause belly fat worse. Your liver prioritizes clearing alcohol, so fat burning stops for hours. Alcohol also disrupts sleep, which raises cortisol, the hormone she links to belly fat. She doesn't say you can never drink, but if your midsection is your main frustration, pull back first.

  • How to Get Toned

Can strength training tighten loose skin on my arms?

Strength training can make loose arm skin look noticeably tighter, even though it can't change your genetics. Nikkiey explains that skin elasticity is partially genetic, but building muscle underneath loose skin dramatically improves its appearance, giving the skin something to hold on to instead of hanging loose. Pair it with fat loss through proper macros.

  • Hormones & Hormone Health

Can birth control affect muscle growth?

It can be a factor, according to Nikkiey. On Ep. 81 she explains that birth control alters hormones that matter for muscle growth, especially testosterone. Women already have far less testosterone than men, so lowering it further adds another variable. Responses vary widely, so talk to your doctor before changing anything.

  • Food Noise, Cravings & Overeating

Do I need a GLP-1 to quiet food noise?

Not necessarily. Nikkiey's view on Ep. 376 is that GLP-1s are tools that can help some people, such as those who are very overweight, but many women can quiet food noise without them by eating enough, eating more protein, front-loading it earlier in the day and eating consistent meals.

  • Supplements & Creatine

Do I need to cycle off creatine?

No. On Ep. 408 of The WarriorBabe Show, Nikkiey explains that no research supports cycling creatine, and your body's own creatine production doesn't shut down in a way that requires breaks. She points to studies running out to five years showing no adverse effects in healthy people, so you can take it continuously.

  • Consistency & Mindset

Why do most New Year's fitness resolutions fail?

Most New Year's fitness resolutions fail because January motivation runs out around week three, before results show up. Nikkiey points to three patterns: goals built only on outcomes like "lose 10 pounds," trying to change every habit at once, and expecting the body to change in a month when it took years to get here.

  • Strength Training for Women

How long should a strength workout be?

Nikkiey Stott says 45 to 60 minutes of focused, progressive strength work is enough for women over 40 to change their body composition. Unless you're a competitive athlete, sessions of 90 minutes or more add fatigue and recovery demand without adding results. Short on time? A 20 to 30 minute session with fewer sets and heavier weights still counts.

  • Macros & Macro Tracking

Should I plan my food ahead or log it as I eat?

Plan ahead. WarriorBabe's coaches recommend logging your food the night before or first thing in the morning, before you eat. Logging as you go usually leaves you at 9 p.m. with protein, carbs or fat left to hit and nothing you can do about it except macro hoard. Planning first lets you adjust while there's still time.

  • Metabolism, Eating More & Reverse Dieting

How can I speed up my metabolism?

Build muscle. Nikkiey calls it the number one way to speed up your metabolism, because muscle is more metabolically active than fat and burns more calories even at rest. That means consistent strength training, paired with eating enough to fuel it, rather than chasing more cardio or cutting calories further.

  • Building Muscle After 40

Do I have to track macros to build muscle?

No. Nikkiey says you don't have to track macros to build muscle, but you do have to eat more protein, because you cannot build what you cannot fuel. Tracking is the more precise tool: on Ep. 5 she explains it beats calorie counting alone because it shows the balance of protein, carbs and fats.

  • Diets, Fasting & Diet Culture

Do cheat meals help your metabolism?

Nikkiey says they can, when you've been in a calorie deficit for a while. She explains that long stretches of restriction lower leptin, which she describes as regulating hunger and metabolism, and a planned cheat meal can temporarily boost it. The extra carbs also refill glycogen, giving you more energy for strength training.

  • Protein for Women

Will eating more protein make me bulky?

No. Nikkiey explains that protein doesn't make you bulky; eating an excess of calories does. Protein is the building block that helps your body hold on to lean muscle while you lose fat, which creates the toned look most women want. Not eating enough protein is what leaves you looking soft.

  • Fat Loss After 40

Can you out-train a bad diet?

No. Nikkiey explains that it doesn't matter how hard you train if your nutrition isn't aligned with your goals. Your body needs protein, healthy fats and carbs to build muscle, burn fat and recover. That includes eating healthy but too little, which she says you can't out-train any more than junk food.

  • The Scale & Tracking Progress

How do I stop obsessing over the scale?

Stop letting the scale be your only measure of progress. Nikkiey explains that the scale grips us because it is instant and black-and-white, so you replace it with progress photos, strength PRs and biofeedback, notice what triggers you, and flip self-sabotaging thoughts into positive ones instead of letting them control you.

  • Sleep, Recovery & Lifestyle

Should I eat less during a deload week?

No, not in any meaningful way. Nikkiey says your body is in active recovery during a deload and needs fuel, so protein stays the same and calories stay roughly the same. If you're in a cut, a slight trim is fine, but dropping something like 500 calories works against the recovery the week is for.

  • Menopause & Perimenopause Weight Loss

How do I lose visceral fat after menopause?

WarriorBabe's approach is to build muscle rather than chase the scale. Strength train consistently, swap long cardio for short sprint intervals, walk daily, and take an honest look at alcohol. Nikkiey says strength training can reduce visceral fat even when your weight doesn't change, so track your waist measurement, not just pounds.

  • How to Get Toned

Do I need to work out more to make my abs show?

No. On Ep. 96, Nikkiey explains that you don't need more work in your workouts to make your abs show. You need to dial in consistency with your nutrition, because you can't outwork a bad diet in the gym. More training only gets you so far and tends to end in burnout.

  • Hormones & Hormone Health

Do calories still matter if I have insulin resistance?

Yes. On Ep. 200 of The WarriorBabe Show, Morgan explains that low-insulin calories are still calories, and losing body fat still requires an energy deficit. What changes is how hard that deficit feels. In her coaching and personal experience, it is easier to stick with on a lower-insulin way of eating.

  • Food Noise, Cravings & Overeating

How do I stop a food craving in the moment?

Use the 10-minute rule: when a craving hits, set a timer for 10 minutes and do something else, like taking a walk, journaling, calling a friend or finishing a task. Drink a glass of water too, since thirst can feel like a craving. Nikkiey says most cravings pass once you pause.

  • Supplements & Creatine

Do I need to do a loading phase when I start creatine?

No. Nikkiey explains on Ep. 408 that the old loading protocol of around 20 grams a day for a week isn't needed and often brings GI discomfort, bloating and water retention. Instead, she recommends a steady three to five grams every day, including rest days, and giving it 14 to 21 days of consistency.

  • Consistency & Mindset

Is it normal to lose friends when you start getting healthy?

Yes. Nikkiey says it's normal for some friendships to change or fade when you start getting healthy. You'll have different friends in different phases of life, and that's okay. Your growth can unsettle people who aren't growing, but that's not yours to carry. Keep showing up and you'll attract like-minded people who support you.

  • Strength Training for Women

How often should women in menopause lift weights?

Two to four sessions a week, depending on who you ask on The WarriorBabe Show. Esther Blum and Dr. Stacy Sims put the minimum at two full-body sessions, with three to build more muscle and bone. Nikkiey suggests about four, or three, up to an hour each. Everyone agrees: not every day, because recovery builds muscle.

  • Macros & Macro Tracking

Why am I tracking my macros but not losing weight?

Most often, the data is off, not your body. Nikkiey explains there's a big difference between tracking and tracking accurately. Eyeballed portions, measuring cups, untracked sauces and loose weekends can mean you're not in the deficit your app shows. Results also take longer than a few weeks. They're delayed, not wasted.

  • Metabolism, Eating More & Reverse Dieting

How do I deal with hunger in a calorie deficit?

Expect some slight hunger and treat it as normal. Nikkiey explains it means your metabolism is working. Being hungry two hours after a meal is fine, but starving 10 to 30 minutes after eating means you should reassess your protein and calories. Water, tea, coffee, closer meals and high-volume foods help.

  • Building Muscle After 40

Do muscles grow during the workout or during rest?

Muscles grow during rest, not during the workout. Nikkiey explains that lifting creates tiny tears in your muscle fibers, which signal your body to repair and rebuild. That rebuilding, called muscle protein synthesis, happens in the hours afterward, fueled by enough food, sleep, hydration and recovery. The gym starts the process. Recovery finishes it.

  • Diets, Fasting & Diet Culture

Do I need to detox or do a cleanse to lose weight?

No. Nikkiey explains that your liver, kidneys and digestive system already filter out and eliminate toxins, so juice cleanses and detox supplements aren't needed. Detox diets usually mean severe calorie restriction, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies, muscle loss and a slowed metabolism. A balanced diet and steady daily habits work better.

  • Protein for Women

Are protein bars a good way to get more protein?

Not usually. Many bars, like Clif bars, carry only about 10 grams of protein from ingredients that don't give your body the amino acid profile it needs, and a daily bar costs $60 to $90 a month. Four hard-boiled eggs and a piece of fruit give more protein for about 50 cents.

  • Fat Loss After 40

Is 10,000 steps a day based on science?

No. Nikkiey explains the 10,000-step goal came from a 1965 Japanese pedometer whose name translates to "10,000 steps meter," not from a doctor, researcher or study. Walking is still worth doing. She suggests 7,000 to 10,000 steps for general health and insulin sensitivity, but not as your main fat loss tool.

  • The Scale & Tracking Progress

    What is body composition?

Body composition is the relative proportion of fat, muscle and bone in your body. Nikkiey explains that building muscle while losing body fat improves it, giving you a leaner, more toned look, even when the scale barely moves. That is why she treats it as a better goal than weight loss alone.

What are the signs of overtraining in women over 40?

According to WarriorBabe's coaches, the signs of overtraining include persistent fatigue, feeling tired but wired and unable to sleep, declining strength and performance, higher injury risk, irritability or a flat mood, lost motivation, feeling cold when others are comfortable, and eating less than ever without losing weight. If you're doing more and feeling worse, take that as the signal.

How fast can I lose menopause belly fat?

Nikkiey says many women see early changes within 30 days: less bloating in the first week, clothes fitting better, a tighter-looking midsection and more energy by the end of the month. Bigger body changes take longer. In Maggie's own story and Angela's, real fat loss and inches came over months to a year.

Does birth control cause weight gain?

Usually not by much. On Ep. 81, Nikkiey says studies suggest birth control doesn't cause significant weight gain. It can be one variable because it affects hormones, but she sees it as rarely the main reason. Diet, alcohol, sleep, water and daily movement usually weigh more heavily.

What is the difference between a food habit and a food addiction?

A food habit is something you repeat automatically without thinking, like Nikkiey's late-night McDonald's stop after ER shifts. A food addiction, as she explains on Ep. 19, is a physical or psychological dependence on a food such as sugar or processed carbs, which can bring intense cravings, irritability and fatigue when you cut back.

Should I take BCAAs or essential amino acids to build muscle?

Choose essential amino acids (EAAs), not BCAAs. On Ep. 389 of The WarriorBabe Show, Maggie explains that your body can't make the nine essential aminos, so EAAs cover what matters. They're optional, though. They help most when you can't hit your protein from food, and whole food protein plus progressive overload is what builds muscle.
