Will eating more protein make me bulky?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

No. Nikkiey explains that protein doesn't make you bulky; eating an excess of calories does. Protein is the building block that helps your body hold on to lean muscle while you lose fat, which creates the toned look most women want. Not eating enough protein is what leaves you looking soft.

The full answer

On Ep. 257, Nikkiey calls the protein-makes-you-bulky idea a myth that drives her up a wall. She explains that bulk comes from a few things, and protein isn't one of them:

  • Eating excessive calories
  • Your hormones being a little bit wacky
  • Pushing a lot of heavy weight while eating a lot of food

Protein, she says, is what your body needs to preserve lean muscle, recover faster and support your metabolism. If you're worried about accidentally looking like a bodybuilder overnight, she points out that building muscle takes time, consistency and serious intention. It doesn't happen by adding chicken to your lunch.

On Ep. 330, Nikkiey goes further: not eating protein is what makes you soft. She explains that toned really means muscle development plus fat loss, and protein is what gives you shape. Many women want to be toned but do the opposite of what gets them there, cutting food to 1,200 calories or leaning on endless cardio. That isn't toned, she says. That's just tired, stressed and burnt out. She also pushes back on the idea that protein doesn't matter in a calorie deficit; protein is how you protect your body while you lose fat.

On Ep. 378, WarriorBabe client Nausheen shares that she used to think protein was only for bodybuilders and avoided it because she didn't want to get bulky. After making it a priority, she didn't get bulky. She feels strong, and now she actually craves foods like chicken and Greek yogurt. If you've been undereating protein out of fear, the problem was the plan you were given, not your body.

Most guidance on The WarriorBabe Show lands at about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day for women over 40, based on goal weight if you have a lot to lose. Nikkiey says strength-training women may need 1.2 or even 1.3. Some episodes and guests cite 0.7 grams as the floor.

Does eating more protein help with fat loss?

Yes. Nikkiey explains that protein helps fat loss in three ways: your body burns more calories digesting it than carbs or fat, it protects and builds muscle while you're eating less, and it keeps you full so cravings don't derail you. She's also clear the digestion boost is small compared with exercise.

How much protein do I need to lose fat and build muscle at the same time?

Nikkiey's range is about 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day, so roughly 150 grams if you weigh 150 pounds. If you have a lot to lose, she bases it on your goal weight instead. One video also sets 100 grams a day as your minimum.
