In this video

Shelly Pollard is 50, teaches 11th grade American Literature and is raising three kids while moving one to college and selling her house. In this video she shares what changed for her with WarriorBabe: more energy to keep up with a busy family, and definition in her arms for the first time she can remember.

The year before, Shelly followed a four-week metabolism plan with almost no carbs, expensive food and short HIIT sessions. She lost 25 pounds but bottomed out quickly and realized she was what Nikkiey Stott calls skinny fat. This year she has lost 11 pounds and is about 7 pounds heavier than she was then, yet she feels much better and sees definition in her arms, glutes, abs and legs.

Shelly also shares that she has stopped taking her estrogen supplements, no longer has night sweats, handles stress more easily and isn't as hungry as she used to be. That is her personal experience, not medical advice. Her message to other women: stop focusing on the scale, notice how you feel and how your clothes fit, and trust the process even on days you don't feel like lifting.

Key takeaways

  • Shelly measures progress by how she feels, how her clothes fit and the definition she sees, not by the number on the scale.
  • She weighs about 7 pounds more than after last year's diet but feels much better and looks more defined.
  • A no-carb plan built on 15 to 20 minutes of HIIT four times a week helped her lose 25 pounds but left her skinny fat and bottomed out.
  • Gaining 8 pounds on vacation didn't derail her; she says that weight came off fairly quickly.
  • Within the first week she noticed her jean shorts were loose in the waist while her glutes filled them out more.
  • Shelly shares that she has stopped her estrogen supplements, no longer has night sweats, handles stress more easily and is less hungry, as her own experience.
  • She keeps going on the days she doesn't feel like hitting the weights by trusting the process.

Questions answered

Can you weigh more and still look more defined?

Shelly is about 7 pounds heavier than she was after last year's diet, but she says she feels so much better and can see definition in her arms, glutes, abs and legs.

What does skinny fat mean for women over 40?

Shelly says hearing Nikkiey Stott talk about being skinny fat was an eye-opener. After losing 25 pounds on a no-carb, HIIT-focused plan, she realized that described her.

Why did a no-carb HIIT diet stop working for Shelly?

Her plan allowed almost no carbs and relied on 15 to 20 minutes of HIIT about four times a week. She says she bottomed out quickly, the food was expensive and the four-week course left her unsure what to do next.

How should I track progress if I stop looking at the scale?

Shelly focuses on how she feels, how her clothes fit and whether she is seeing definition, following Nikkiey Stott's advice to stop looking at the scale.

Can you get arm definition at 50?

Shelly says she had never had arm definition in her 50 years and had accepted she just had weak arms, but she now sees definition in her arms.

  • How to Get Toned

What does skinny fat mean for women?

Skinny fat means you look slim but soft, with little muscle tone. On The WarriorBabe Show, Nikkiey Stott explains that it often comes from staying in a calorie deficit too long. You lose weight, but your body also burns the muscle that makes you look toned. The fix is eating enough to build muscle.

Shelly: Hey WarriorBabes. My name is Shelly Pollard. I am 50 years old and I teach 11th grade students American Literature. I have three kids. Our youngest, we just got the last one through driver's ed this summer, y'all. So my youngest is 15 and I have an 18-year-old son. The 15-year-old is a girl and she's going to be a sophomore this year.

And my 18-year-old, my baby boy, is taking off to college this summer. So we're doing a lot of moving. Thank God for WarriorBabe, because I have the energy to do all these moves. And my 24-year-old daughter, my oldest, just recently made a move this past weekend. And my husband and I are selling our house, so lots of cleaning and moving. WarriorBabe is not just giving me the energy to do all these moves and keep up with my busy, wonderful, independent children.

Love them. And now they're really proud too. They've always been proud of mom, but now it's like, whoa, mom, look at your guns. So obviously WarriorBabe has impacted me physically, but also mentally and emotionally.

Physically, I've lost 11 pounds altogether. But let's be honest: I gained 8 pounds when my husband and I went on vacation, so that 8 pounds came off kind of quickly. So really, I guess technically 3 pounds. But like Nikkiey says, don't look at the scale. Stop looking at the scale and focus on how you feel. How do you feel? How do your clothes fit? Are you seeing the definition?

And let me tell you, holy cow, I'm seeing the definition. I think I've posted a few times that I finally have definition in my arms. I have never had definition in my arms in all of my 50 years that I can remember. I had just resolved myself to the fact that, well, I guess I have weak arms. But no. Heck no.

In fact, the very first thing that attracted me to this program was seeing Nikkiey's arms. How can anybody look at those arms and not go, dang, I want that. I want arms like that. So I'm seeing definition everywhere.

After the first week, I was wearing my jean shorts around the house doing work, and the waist was loose. But the butt. I had a butt. That's the first thing I kept saying all week: oh my gosh, I have a butt.

And I've stopped taking my estrogen supplements. I don't have night sweats. I am able to deal with stress more easily. And I'm not hungry like I was in the past.

Last year, I was on a plan that was focused on renewing my metabolism. But I couldn't have carbs at all. If I had carbs, it was very, very little. And it was an expensive program. The program itself really wasn't that expensive, but getting all that food was very expensive. And it mainly focused on 15 to 20 minutes, maybe four times a week, of HIIT, high intensity interval training, just trying to get my metabolism going.

So of course, I bottomed out really quickly. And the course only lasted four weeks. So I'm kind of like, well, what do I do? Do I just start the thing over again? I lost 25 pounds. Awesome. But that was an eye-opener when Nikkiey talks about being skinny fat. That was me.

Now, this year, even though I've lost 11 pounds, I'm probably about 7 pounds heavier than what I was last year. But I feel so much better. And I can see the definition in my arms and in my butt and in my abs and all over the place. I'm even seeing definition in my legs. I've always had good legs, but wow. Holy cow.

So I totally recommend this program. Learning to trust the process, even though some days it's not 100%. You're not always going to feel like, yeah, I can't wait to hit that gym, or I can't wait to hit those weights. But you trust the process. Trust the process. Trust the process.

And by the way, Nikkiey, I love the books you suggested. I've already read through the first three. I noticed you added one. I'm going to go back and get that one and read it, too.
