Skinny Fat at 49: How Brenda Stopped Under-Eating
Chapters
In this video
Brenda Hughes is a 49-year-old mom of three teenage sons who started her fitness journey feeling out of shape and skinny fat. She worked through challenge after challenge, learned to track macros and logged her meals for over 600 days. She reached her goal weight, but she looked skinny rather than strong and muscular.
Her real obstacle was mindset: eating enough food to support the body she wanted. After trying several programs with the same result, she reached out to Nikkiey Stott, was turned down the first time because she only wanted a plan to follow, and came back once she knew what she wanted. Within the first few weeks she saw how much she had been under-eating, even while tracking and eating healthy.
Once she started eating enough, Brenda says her energy soared and her workouts improved, and weekly reassurance from Nikkiey built her confidence. She shares that she now has the tools and skills to keep working toward a lean, muscular body without buying another program.
Key takeaways
- Brenda found that reaching her goal weight left her looking skinny, not strong and muscular, so the number on the scale was not the goal she actually wanted.
- Tracking macros and eating healthy were not enough for Brenda, because she still wasn't eating enough food to fuel her muscle goals.
- Switching from one program to another kept giving Brenda the same skinny result, which pushed her to look at what she herself needed to change.
- A quote that stuck with her: you change when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of the change.
- Brenda describes the WarriorBabe process as starting with the right mindset and a commitment to yourself before digging into program details.
- Within weeks of eating more, Brenda says her energy soared and her workouts greatly improved.
- Weekly coaching reassurance and a supportive community helped Brenda stay confident and get back up when she stumbled.
Questions answered
Why do I look skinny instead of toned after reaching my goal weight?
For Brenda, the problem was under-eating. Even though she tracked her macros and ate healthy, she wasn't eating enough food to support the strong, muscular body she wanted.
Can you be under-eating even if you track macros?
Yes. Brenda had logged her meals for over 600 days and still discovered within the first few weeks of coaching that she had been under-eating for a long time.
What changed when Brenda started eating more?
She says that in a short time her energy soared and her workouts greatly improved, and she felt she could finally work toward a lean, muscular body.
Why didn't buying more fitness programs work for Brenda?
She tried several programs and they all gave her the same result: just plain skinny. She realized another program wasn't going to move her any closer to her goals until she changed what she was doing.

Brenda: Hi there, my name is Brenda Hughes. I'm a 49-year-old mother of three teenage sons and currently a part-time account specialist. I started my fitness journey two years ago as I was totally out of shape and just plain skinny fat.
I saw an ad on Facebook for a free 15-day challenge by a trainer, Lindsay, and I figured I could do anything for 15 days. I went on to complete that three times, followed up with her six-week challenge and another program she had, which was called Sculpt.
I reached my goal weight and realized I just looked skinny. It wasn't what I wanted at all. She taught us how to track macros, and I caught on really quickly, and I have logged meals for over 600 days now. However, my downfall has been getting past the mentality of eating enough food to feed my goals, which was a strong, muscular, lean body. I tried several programs, all yielding the same result: just plain skinny.
However, this was in my blood now. I love fitness and I love health, so I was determined to find a solution to reach my goals. I came across Nikkiey in November of 2018. I had an interview and was actually rejected, because I told her I did not want to create my own plans. I just wanted to purchase a program and follow it.
So after that, I purchased another program. And as I started doing that program, I realized this was not going to get me any farther down the road to my goals than what I was doing.
And I came across this quote that said, "You change when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of the change." And it made me really think: what was I doing that I wasn't changing and getting the results I wanted? So I reached back out to Nikkiey and got another interview, and was accepted, because I knew this time what I wanted.
The first few weeks, I was blown away at how intricately detailed her plan was: getting in the right mindset, making the commitment to yourself before digging into any of the details of the program. I was really eager to get started.
Within the first few weeks, I realized how much under-eating I was doing. I had been doing this for so long. Even though I tracked my macros and ate healthy, I just wasn't eating enough to feed the goals I wanted. And in just a short time, I could feel my energy soaring. My workouts were greatly improving. And having Nikkiey's reassurance every week was just so confidence-building for me.
Her program has provided me with all the tools and skills I need, so that I will never have to buy another program again, and I can achieve that lean, muscular body that I have been striving for for two years.
Along with the tools and skills I've learned inside of WarriorBabe, there's an absolutely amazing Facebook group for women in all stages of the journey, from beginners to advanced, to cheer you on and support you when you stumble along the way.
I only wish I would have found, or had the opportunity to be in, this kind of program when I started my fitness journey. It would have saved me hours of frustration, months of delays and lack of progress, and a ton of money on programs that I didn't need and didn't see results from.
So for all of you searching for a program to tone up, lose some weight, or who are fitness crazy and searching for that dream body, this is the program for you. You deserve to invest in yourself. You won't regret any time you spend on this program or the money you spend on it.
