What app should I use to track my macros?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and WarriorBabe's coaches · Updated
The short answer
The app used on The WarriorBabe Show is MyFitnessPal. Coaches build macro meal plans in it, and clients like Denise and Angie track with it every day. The episodes don't compare apps, so the tool matters less than how you use it: scan barcodes, pick entries you can weigh in grams or ounces, and keep it simple.

The full answer
In a WarriorBabe video walkthrough, one coach builds a full 2,200 calorie macro plan in MyFitnessPal. Her rule for accuracy: barcode scan the foods you buy whenever you can. When you can't, look for an entry with the green check mark and a serving size you can change, ideally in grams or ounces. She skips entries that only allow "one can" or give no gram or ounce option. She also enters foods first and adjusts the quantities at the end, once she can see the whole day laid out.
The app works best with a simple system around it. Denise, who lost 25 pounds, plans one night a week while watching TV. She enters her three staple meals first (pre-workout, post-workout and a yogurt, berries and almond butter comfort meal), then fits lean protein and carbs around them. Trying to be creative with lots of different foods didn't work for her, so she repeats the same foods. The coach interviewing her agrees and suggests newer trackers enter pre- and post-workout meals first, since those numbers matter most. She also admits that hitting protein, fat and carbs within plus or minus five can feel overwhelming at first. Spending a couple of hours playing around in the app helps.
If logging sounds like too much, you're not the only one. On Ep. 394, Angie tells Nikkiey that all the measuring and logging in MyFitnessPal felt like a lot at first. Then it became a habit, like brushing her teeth, and now it's just part of life.
The episodes here don't test or rank other apps, so they don't say MyFitnessPal is the only option. What they show is that it works when you use it consistently and accurately. If tracking hasn't stuck for you before, the problem was probably the setup, not you.

Macros & Macro Tracking
How do I hit my macros when I work long shifts?
Stop waiting for a proper lunch break and plan for five-minute meals. On The WarriorBabe Show, women working 12-hour shifts bring simple food they can eat fast, like cottage cheese, a sandwich, yogurt or a shake. They treat meals like snacks, prep everything the day before, and ask a coworker to cover for a few minutes.

Macros & Macro Tracking
Do calories still matter if I hit my macros?
If you hit your macros, the calorie number becomes a check, not the goal. One WarriorBabe coach says being 80 calories under or 150 over is fine as long as each macro lands within plus or minus 5 grams. If you're off by around 200 calories, cross-check your nutrition labels to make sure what you logged is accurate.

Macros & Macro Tracking
Do I have to track macros forever?
No. Nikkiey is clear that you don't have to track macros for the rest of your life. Tracking and weighing your food is a temporary, educational phase that teaches you what real portions of protein, carbs and fat look like. Do it consistently for a couple of years and it becomes second nature.
