Do light weights with high reps tone your arms?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

No. Nikkiey explains that there's no special toning effect from two-, three- or five-pound dumbbells. Your arms adapted to that load long ago, so it gives them no reason to change. What reads as toned is real muscle with less body fat on top, and that comes from challenging weight that goes up over time.

The full answer

On Ep. 388, Nikkiey is blunt: you can't tone a muscle that isn't there. Muscles grow or shrink, and body fat goes up or down. The look women call toned is the mix of how much muscle you have and how much fat sits over it. She adds that you can build muscle across a range of reps, so high reps alone aren't the issue. The issue is effort. If you're doing 20 reps with a weight you could have lifted 45 times, you're going through the motions, and your muscles need a reason to adapt.

In her videos, she shares her own story: she did arm circles with light weights for months and the backs of her arms never changed. They only started changing when she picked up a real dumbbell and pressed it overhead. The tricep line is worked by pressing movements that use your chest, shoulders and triceps together, and she says two-pound arm circles don't create enough tension to trigger anything. She also notes the upper body is where a small amount of new muscle tends to show up fastest.

What she recommends instead:

  • Presses (floor or incline), overhead presses and rows with dumbbells heavy enough that the last couple of reps are hard
  • Three sets of 8 to 12 reps, resting 60 to 90 seconds, three days a week with a rest day between
  • Progressive overload: when 12 reps feels easy, go up, even by two and a half pounds

And if fear of bulking keeps you light, Nikkiey says women don't get bulky by accident from picking up a 20-pound dumbbell. Real load plus managing your nutrition is what creates the look you're after. It was never your effort; it was the plan.

Why don't I look toned after losing weight?

Because toned comes from muscle, not from weight loss. Nikkiey explains that the firm, defined look is enough muscle sitting under a reduced layer of body fat. If you cut calories without enough protein or strength training, you lose muscle along with fat and end up a smaller, softer version of the same shape.

Do crunches flatten your stomach after 40?

No. Nikkiey says crunches won't flatten your stomach after 40, because you can't spot reduce belly fat and crunches don't burn enough calories or build enough muscle to change your shape. What works is full-body strength training like squats, deadlifts and carries, enough protein, recovery, and lowering your overall body fat.

    What does toned actually mean?

Toned means you have developed, defined muscle and body fat low enough for that muscle to show. Nikkiey explains it isn't a scientific term but a marketing one. Physically it is just muscle plus leanness, so getting there takes strength training to build muscle and nutrition that lowers body fat, not chasing a lower number on the scale.
