Will lifting weights give me bulky arms?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

No. Nikkiey explains that women don't have the testosterone levels to accidentally build huge muscles, and after 40, declining testosterone makes building muscle harder, not easier. What lifting gives you is firm, defined arms. Muscle creates tone, not size, and arms that get no training tend to lose shape and look soft.

The full answer

The fear of bulking up keeps many women away from the exact training their arms need. On the bat wings episode, Nikkiey says lifting heavy builds lean, defined muscle, not large, bulky muscle. She is also blunt that it would take a lot to get to bulky. In her arm workout video, she pushes back on the idea that women can't handle heavy weight and says you can challenge yourself more than you are lifting right now.

She also corrects a few related myths:

  • Toning comes from building muscle, not from endless reps of the same light movement.
  • High-rep, low-weight arm work alone won't build enough muscle to change the shape of your arms.
  • Skipping bicep work doesn't protect you. Neglected arms lose shape and look soft, even if your weight stays the same.
  • You don't need arms every day. Muscles grow when they recover, and training arms one to two times a week with real intensity works better than light daily arm work.

If your arms still look soft after training, the problem isn't the weights. Nikkiey says visible arm definition usually starts showing at around 22-25% body fat or lower for most women. At 30-35%, the muscle is there but buried under fat, so no number of tricep exercises will show it on their own. That's why she puts nutrition first, with protein a priority, and then uses strength training to build the muscle that creates definition and gives your skin something to hold on to.

So the plan isn't to avoid weights. It's to lift with real intensity, focus on the triceps, shoulders and upper back, and pair that with eating that brings body fat down.

How often should women over 40 train arms?

Nikkiey recommends training arms two to three times a week as part of a full body or upper body split, with no separate arm day needed. Elsewhere she frames it as one to two focused arm sessions with real intensity. Either way, daily light arm work is out. Muscles grow when they recover.

  • How to Get Toned

How do I get rid of bat wings after 40?

Bat wings shrink when you lose body fat and build real triceps and shoulder muscle, not when you add more light arm exercises. Nikkiey explains that bat wings combine excess upper-arm fat, lost triceps muscle and reduced skin elasticity. Nutrition comes first, then challenging strength training reveals and shapes the arm.

Can you spot reduce fat with targeted exercises?

No. Nikkiey is clear that you can't target fat loss to one area. Planks won't burn belly fat and tricep work won't burn arm fat on their own. What works is training your whole body, especially with compound lifts, and eating enough protein to build muscle while you lose fat overall.
