Can you spot reduce fat with targeted exercises?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

No. Nikkiey is clear that you can't target fat loss to one area. Planks won't burn belly fat and tricep work won't burn arm fat on their own. What works is training your whole body, especially with compound lifts, and eating enough protein to build muscle while you lose fat overall.

The full answer

If you've done hundreds of crunches or months of light kickbacks with nothing to show for it, that's the plan failing you, not your effort. In her cellulite episode, Nikkiey calls spot reduction one of the biggest lies in fitness content, spread because it sounds faster than it is. Muscle is what helps you burn fat overall, so she trains every part of the body, leaning on compound movements like squats and deadlifts that work several muscles at once.

Targeted work can even backfire. In her love handles episode, she explains that side bends and weighted oblique twists grow the muscle under the fat without touching the fat on top, so the waist can look thicker. Think of a blanket over a pillow: inflate the pillow and the blanket puffs out more. Isolated core work also burns very little. She says 200 crunches burn fewer calories than a two-minute walk up the stairs. She also points out that piling on excessive cardio raises cortisol, which she says stores fat in the midsection, especially when nutrition isn't supporting you. Instead she suggests heavy Romanian deadlifts and anti-rotation core work like the Pallof press, which trains the deep stabilizers that pull your waist in.

Arms follow the same logic. Nikkiey describes bat wings as a mix of excess upper-arm fat, lost tricep muscle and reduced skin elasticity, and arm exercises alone can't fix all three. She notes visible arm definition usually starts showing around 22-25% body fat, so at 30-35%, no amount of tricep work will reveal the muscle underneath. Her rule: nutrition is king, exercise is queen. Get your protein and calorie deficit in place, then lift to build the muscle that shows once the fat comes off.

Will lifting weights give me bulky arms?

No. Nikkiey explains that women don't have the testosterone levels to accidentally build huge muscles, and after 40, declining testosterone makes building muscle harder, not easier. What lifting gives you is firm, defined arms. Muscle creates tone, not size, and arms that get no training tend to lose shape and look soft.

How do I get rid of bat wings after 40?

Bat wings shrink when you lose body fat and build real triceps and shoulder muscle, not when you add more light arm exercises. Nikkiey explains that bat wings combine excess upper-arm fat, lost triceps muscle and reduced skin elasticity. Nutrition comes first, then challenging strength training reveals and shapes the arm.

How often should women over 40 train arms?

Nikkiey recommends training arms two to three times a week as part of a full body or upper body split, with no separate arm day needed. Elsewhere she frames it as one to two focused arm sessions with real intensity. Either way, daily light arm work is out. Muscles grow when they recover.
