How do I get rid of bat wings after 40?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
Bat wings shrink when you lose body fat and build real triceps and shoulder muscle, not when you add more light arm exercises. Nikkiey explains that bat wings combine excess upper-arm fat, lost triceps muscle and reduced skin elasticity. Nutrition comes first, then challenging strength training reveals and shapes the arm.

The full answer
Nikkiey explains that after 40, women lose muscle faster than in their 20s and 30s, skin elasticity changes, and fat tends to settle at the back of the arm. That is why the biggest mistake she sees is doing arm workouts several times a week while ignoring protein, undereating, or never being in a proper calorie deficit. The muscle stays hidden under body fat. She says visible arm definition for most women starts showing around 22-25% body fat or lower, and at 30-35% no amount of triceps work will show definition. In her words, nutrition is king, exercise is queen.
Once fat loss is underway, the training has to be real. Two-pound kickbacks and arm circles don't build muscle because your body adapted to that weight long ago. Nikkiey did arm circles for months with no change until she picked up a real dumbbell. Her priorities:
- Triceps first: a dip, overhead extension or kickback with a challenging weight, slow on the way down, squeeze, press back up with control, no swinging.
- The overhead press: 3 sets of 8-10 reps with a weight that's challenging by rep 8, working shoulders, triceps and core together.
- Shoulders and upper back: a shoulder press, lateral raise or row, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Rounded shoulders make arms hang softer and heavier, and this work also helps protect your joints.
On loose skin, Nikkiey says genetics is only partly the story. Building muscle underneath gives your skin something to hold on to, so the arm looks tighter. You won't get bulky either; she points out that declining testosterone makes muscle harder to build after 40, not easier. She also notes that women respond differently, so some need more strength work and others need to change how they eat. If your arms haven't changed, it's the plan, not you.

How to Get Toned
Will lifting weights give me bulky arms?
No. Nikkiey explains that women don't have the testosterone levels to accidentally build huge muscles, and after 40, declining testosterone makes building muscle harder, not easier. What lifting gives you is firm, defined arms. Muscle creates tone, not size, and arms that get no training tend to lose shape and look soft.

How to Get Toned
How often should women over 40 train arms?
Nikkiey recommends training arms two to three times a week as part of a full body or upper body split, with no separate arm day needed. Elsewhere she frames it as one to two focused arm sessions with real intensity. Either way, daily light arm work is out. Muscles grow when they recover.

Can you spot reduce fat with targeted exercises?
No. Nikkiey is clear that you can't target fat loss to one area. Planks won't burn belly fat and tricep work won't burn arm fat on their own. What works is training your whole body, especially with compound lifts, and eating enough protein to build muscle while you lose fat overall.
