Protein Calculator for Women Over 40
How much protein you need each day and at each meal, for women over 40, in menopause, lifting or not. Most women we meet eat about half of this.
Your daily protein
175 grams a day
Range: 160 to 190 g, based on your current weight
About 35 g at each of 5 meals or snacks. 25 to 30 grams or more per meal is what builds muscle and keeps you full.
This doesn't go down in menopause. Your body gets less efficient at turning protein into muscle after 40, so you need as much or more.

How your numbers are worked out
- 1About 1 gram of protein per pound of your goal weight, or your current weight if you don't have a goal. Why
- 2Up to 1.2 grams per pound if you strength train, because muscle needs more to build after 40. Why
- 3The same through menopause: your need doesn't drop, it gets harder to meet. Why
- 4Spread over meals of 25 to 30 grams or more. Your body absorbs more than 30 grams at once; muscle building tops out around there. Why
- 5Mostly from food: about 80% from whole foods and 20% from shakes and bars. Why

Questions women ask
How much protein does a woman over 40 need?
About 1 gram per pound of goal weight per day, and up to 1.2 grams if you strength train. A 150-pound woman aims for roughly 150 grams. After 40 your body gets less efficient at turning protein into muscle, so you need as much or more than you did at 30.
Do I need more protein in menopause?
Your target doesn't drop. Nikkiey Stott, WarriorBabe's co-founder, explains that perimenopause and menopause make muscle harder to keep, so hitting about 1 gram per pound matters more, not less.
How much protein should I eat per meal?
Aim for 25 to 30 grams or more at each meal. Most women get 10 to 15 grams, which leaves them hungry and does little for muscle.
Is high protein bad for my kidneys?
For healthy women with no kidney condition, Nikkiey Stott says the research doesn't support high protein causing kidney damage; the worry came from studies of people whose kidneys were already compromised. If you have a kidney condition, set your protein with your doctor.
How much protein do I need on Ozempic or another GLP-1?
Enough to protect your muscle while you eat less, which usually means making protein the priority at every meal. Set your exact number with your doctor; use this calculator's result as a starting point to discuss.

Protein for Women
How much protein do women over 40 need?
Most guidance on The WarriorBabe Show lands at about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day for women over 40, based on goal weight if you have a lot to lose. Nikkiey says strength-training women may need 1.2 or even 1.3. Some episodes and guests cite 0.7 grams as the floor.

Protein for Women
Why do women need more protein as they get older?
Women need more protein with age because they lose muscle every decade and their bodies get worse at turning protein into muscle, which Nikkiey calls anabolic resistance. To get the same muscle-building response as a younger woman, you need more protein, not less. Eating less to lose weight usually works against you.

Menopause & Perimenopause Weight Loss
How much protein do women in menopause need?
Nikkiey's recommendation is about one gram of protein per pound of body weight, so a 150-pound woman aims for roughly 150 grams a day, and that target stays the same through menopause. Guests on The WarriorBabe Show land in a similar range, and several say most women are eating far too little.
