Is white rice or brown rice better for weight loss in menopause?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
Neither is better across the board. Nikkiey says both are valid for menopause fat loss: brown rice has more fiber and a slightly lower glycemic impact, but it digests slower and can cause bloating, while white rice is easier on digestion and works well after training. Pick the one your gut tolerates and you'll eat consistently.

The full answer
If you've been told white rice is off-limits after 40, Nikkiey disagrees. On her cheap high-protein grocery list video, she lays out the real trade-off. Brown rice brings more fiber and a slightly lower glycemic impact, but because it takes longer to digest, it can leave a lot of women bloated. White rice absorbs faster, which is why she calls it a better post-workout carb. She also points out that most women will actually eat white rice more consistently, and her rule is simple: the best carb is the one you will eat.
So the choice comes down to how your body responds, not which rice wins on paper:
- If brown rice sits well with you, the extra fiber is a bonus.
- If it leaves you bloated or uncomfortable, white rice is a perfectly valid choice.
- Around your workouts, white rice is the easier, faster-digesting option.
Nikkiey uses the same thinking with potatoes. She says white potatoes get an unfair reputation, and that sweet potatoes, while higher in fiber, aren't dramatically superior for most women. Rice is no different. Neither one is the reason fat loss has stalled.
Fiber still matters, though, just not only from rice. Nikkiey describes vegetables and fiber as one of the most underrated parts of the store for women in menopause, explaining that gut bacteria help metabolize estrogen and fiber feeds those bacteria. If you go with white rice, cheap frozen vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower rice or a stir-fry blend are an easy way to cover your fiber. And if you're dealing with ongoing digestive or hormonal symptoms, that's worth raising with your doctor.

Do I need to do cardio to lose weight in menopause?
No. Nikkiey says cardio isn't what drives fat loss in menopause, and leaning on it can backfire. She explains that too much cardio spikes cortisol and burns muscle, especially in a calorie deficit. What she recommends instead is strength training as the foundation, plus enough protein, daily walking and proper recovery.

What are the first signs of perimenopause?
According to guests on The WarriorBabe Show, the first signs usually aren't hot flashes or missed periods. Dr. Jolene Brighten says falling progesterone shows up first as worsening PMS, irritability, breast tenderness and waking at night before your period, sometimes from 35. Hatty McCafferty adds sleep disruption, skin changes, digestive shifts and fatigue.

Can eating too little make belly fat worse?
Yes, according to Nikkiey. She says chronic under-eating, often 1,100 to 1,300 calories a day, signals famine to your body. That raises cortisol, slows metabolism and makes your body hold on to belly fat. Her fix is eating enough, with protein at every meal, plus strength training and real recovery.
