Is collagen worth taking after 40?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
Collagen can be worth taking after 40 for joint support, connective tissue and recovery, but it is not a magic fix for your skin. Nikkiey says it is not where she would start. If your budget is limited, choose creatine over collagen every time. Collagen also doesn't count toward your daily protein.

The full answer
Nikkiey explains that your collagen production starts declining in your 20s and keeps dropping with age. That is why women notice changes in their skin, joints and recovery. Her issue is with the marketing, which she calls very misleading. Where collagen actually helps is joint support, connective tissue and recovery, especially if you are training consistently. If you do use it, she says around 10 grams a day is a common effective range, and pairing it with vitamin C can help support collagen synthesis.
On Ep. 250, exercise physiologist Dr. Stacy Sims adds some nuance. She says there is some research showing collagen supports structural things like hair, nails and joints, but the results are hit or miss depending on the kind, the type and when you take it. Her bigger frustration is that women treat collagen as their protein. Collagen is a specific structural protein. It is not the dietary protein your muscles and neurotransmitters need, so it does not count toward your protein intake for the day. If you've been counting your collagen scoop as protein, you may be eating less protein than you think.
So where does that leave you? Both Nikkiey and Dr. Sims say to get the foundation right first:
- Nutrition first, with your protein coming from food.
- If you are choosing where to spend money, Nikkiey puts creatine ahead of collagen.
- Add collagen later if you want extra support for your joints and recovery, without expecting it to change your skin.
Collagen isn't a waste, but it isn't the missing piece either. If results have stalled, look at your plan before you add another supplement.

Supplements & Creatine
Which supplements are a waste of money?
Nikkiey Stott names four supplements most women over 40 can skip: green powders, which are usually underdosed and don't replace real food; biotin, unless you actually have a deficiency; apple cider vinegar gummies, which she calls basically candy; and fat burners, which she says are mostly caffeine packaged differently. You don't need more supplements, just the right ones.

Supplements & Creatine
Will creatine make women look bulky?
No. Nikkiey explains that creatine doesn't add bulk or fat. It pulls water into your muscle cells, which can raise the scale 2 to 4 pounds in the first week or two and make muscles look slightly fuller. That's hydration of muscle tissue, and fuller muscles look more defined, not bigger.

Can creatine help with brain fog in perimenopause?
Nikkiey says it can. Your brain uses creatine for energy the same way your muscles do, and she points to studies showing better memory, processing speed and executive function. She noticed more clarity and energy herself during a stretch of brain fog and fatigue, and calls it directly relevant to perimenopause brain fog.
