If you have been eating less and less after 40 and your body still isn't responding, this video lays out a different approach. Nikkiey Stott walks through the four steps she uses with clients to go from starving and stuck to eating more and finally changing their bodies.
The steps are simple: eat more so you can build muscle, stop letting the scale decide whether you are making progress, track your macros with protein as the priority, and alternate between building phases and fat loss phases instead of trying to do both at once. Nikkiey uses the example of Cheryl, who transformed her body in her late 50s by working up to 3,300 calories a day, gaining 20 pounds on purpose, mostly muscle, and then running fat loss phases on 1,800 to 1,900 calories a day.
You will also learn how to read your biofeedback, meaning energy, sleep, strength and mood, to decide whether it is time to build or time to cut. The goal is consistency, not perfection.
Key takeaways
- Eating less after 40 often backfires: Nikkiey explains that the less you eat, the fewer calories your body burns, while eating more lets you build muscle.
- Cheryl worked up to 3,300 calories a day in her late 50s and gained 20 pounds on purpose, mostly muscle, before revealing it in a fat loss phase.
- Instead of tracking the number on the scale, track how your clothes fit, whether you are lifting heavier and how much energy you have during the day.
- Muscle takes up less space than fat, so you can weigh the same and still look leaner, more defined and stronger, because body composition is what changes.
- Make protein your priority, aiming for about one gram per pound of body weight, so a 150-pound woman would aim for about 150 grams a day.
- Swap foods you already eat for higher-protein versions, like protein chips instead of regular chips, chickpea or edamame noodles instead of pasta, or a protein shake with almond milk and ice at night.
- Focus on one goal at a time: Nikkiey says building muscle and losing fat at once is possible but slow and often leaves you without enough calories to build or enough deficit to lose fat.
- If you feel strong and energized but want more definition, it may be time to cut; if you feel depleted, weak or plateaued, it is probably time to build.
Questions answered
Will eating more make me gain fat after 40?
Nikkiey says that is a common fear, but eating more is what allows you to build muscle. Her client Cheryl gained 20 pounds on purpose while eating up to 3,300 calories a day, and most of it was muscle, which was later revealed in a fat loss phase.
How much protein should I eat to lose fat while eating more?
The simple rule in the video is about one gram of protein per pound of body weight. If you weigh 150 pounds, that is about 150 grams of protein a day.
Can I build muscle and lose fat at the same time?
Nikkiey says it is technically possible, especially for beginners or people coming back after a break, but it is slow and hard to track. That is why WarriorBabe coaches women to focus on one goal at a time.
How do I know if I should be in a build phase or a fat loss phase?
If you feel strong and energized but want more definition, it might be time to cut. If you feel depleted, weak or plateaued, it is probably time to build, and you should listen to your energy, sleep, strength and mood, not just the mirror.
How can I tell I'm making progress if the scale isn't moving?
Look at how you look and feel: whether your clothes fit differently, whether you are lifting heavier and whether you have more energy. Because muscle takes up less space than fat, you can weigh the same and look leaner and more defined.

Protein for Women
How much protein do I need to lose fat and build muscle at the same time?
Nikkiey's range is about 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day, so roughly 150 grams if you weigh 150 pounds. If you have a lot to lose, she bases it on your goal weight instead. One video also sets 100 grams a day as your minimum.

Nikkiey: How to lose weight while eating more after 40. You were lied to. You don't need to eat less to get your dream body. In fact, I've helped thousands of women over 40 go from starving and stuck to eating more and finally transforming their bodies. And in this video, I'm giving you the exact playbook that I gave them so you can enjoy food again and start building the body you want. So stay with me, because once you understand how to fuel your body the right way, you'll never fear food again, and your results will finally stick. Let's get into it.
Why you should eat more. The first step of this, obviously, is to eat more. Now, I know you probably still think eating more will make you gain fat, and in a second I'll break down why that's not true, so you can finally feel confident when you choose to eat more. Which means no more skipping breakfast because you ate too much last night. No more eating a thousand calories and calling it discipline. No more feeling guilty for having carbs. And no more letting the number on the scale dictate your worth.
But I fully understand why you feel like you should be eating less. After 40, your metabolism naturally slows. Hormones shift, energy dips, and everything that you used to do, cutting carbs, skipping meals, running off the weight, just stops working. You feel stuck. So like most women, your instinct is to eat even less. You start cutting meals, slashing portions, avoiding entire food groups. And your body, your metabolism, tanks. Your cravings get worse. You're doing everything right, but your body isn't responding.
And you're not alone. I coach women through this exact spiral every single day, and here's what I see over and over: the less they eat, the fewer calories their bodies burn. But when you eat more, you're able to build muscle.
Just like Cheryl. She completely transformed her body in her late 50s, and she didn't do it by cutting food. She did it by fueling her body. At the start of her journey, Cheryl worked her way up to 3,300 calories a day. She gained 20 pounds on purpose, but most of it was muscle. And that muscle turned her body into a fat-burning machine. That's the part no one tells you. Cheryl didn't just look different. She moved different, felt stronger, became unstoppable. And when she entered a fat loss phase, everything she built underneath was finally revealed.
Stop obsessing over the scale. Eating more to build the foundation you need will feel impossible if you're still obsessed with the scale, because the scale doesn't tell the whole story, and it might be lying to you. Have you ever stepped on the scale, seen the same number for weeks, and felt like all your effort was pointless? Now, what if I told you that your dream transformation doesn't involve the number on the scale?
Most women over 40 tie progress to pounds, because that's what we were taught: smaller number equals more success. But here's the truth. That mindset slowly kills your progress. You start under-eating, over-exercising, second-guessing yourself after every meal. And worst of all, you stop trusting your body. You ignore the strength gains, the better sleep, the reduced bloating, because the scale doesn't move.
Instead of tracking the number, track how you look and feel. Do your clothes fit differently? Are you lifting heavier weights? Do you have more energy during the day? That's real progress. A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, but muscle takes up less space in your body. So you can weigh the same, yet look leaner, more defined and visibly stronger. It's not about losing weight. It's about changing what your weight is made of. That's body composition. That's why the mirror, your strength, how your clothes fit and how you feel are far better measures of progress than the number on the scale.
Track macros. This is the key you've been missing to eat more while building the body you want, so pay attention. Because when you eat the right macros, you can eat more, feel better and finally see results without starving yourself. Macros aren't just numbers on your food packaging. They're the building blocks your body uses to build muscle, keep energy high and feel strong every day.
Let's look back at Cheryl, for example. Even during her fat loss phase, she was eating 1,800 to 1,900 calories a day. Not because she was lucky, but because her macros were dialed in. She was eating with intention, not restriction.
So what kind of macros was Cheryl eating, and what exactly should you be tracking? Start with protein. It's your priority. A simple rule: aim for one gram of protein per pound of body weight. So if you weigh 150 pounds, your goal is about 150 grams of protein per day. And don't overthink it. Just swap the foods you're already eating for higher-protein versions. Craving chips? Try Quest Protein Chips. Loving pasta? Swap in chickpea pasta or edamame noodles. Still hungry at night? Blend a quick protein shake with almond milk and ice. The goal isn't perfection. It's just consistency.
And once you're fueling your body the right way, there's still one critical piece almost everyone skips. Alternating between building and fat loss is the key to finally seeing real change in your body without burning out. It's important that you know how to balance build and fat loss phases, because staying in one too long either burns you out or holds you back. But cycling them strategically creates real, lasting change.
I know you've probably heard you can build muscle and burn fat at the same time. And while, yes, it's technically possible, especially for beginners or those coming back after a break, it's slow and really hard to track. Trying to do both at once often leads to spinning your wheels: not enough calories to build muscle, not enough deficit to lose fat. That's why we coach women to focus on one goal at a time.
Just like Cheryl. She didn't get her results from quick hacks. She went through two building phases and two fat loss phases over two and a half years. She built the muscle first, then peeled back the fat to reveal it. That's how she got leaner, stronger and stayed healthy without wrecking her metabolism.
So how do you know how to cycle this properly? Simple. If you're feeling strong and energized but want more definition, it might be time to cut. If you're feeling depleted, weak or plateaued, it's probably time to build. The key is to listen to your biofeedback, energy, sleep, strength, mood, not just the mirror. Building phases require patience and calories. Fat loss phases require precision and consistency. And the magic happens when you cycle them with intention, just like Cheryl did.
And I know this might be a lot of information to take in at one time. That's why I made the Ultimate Guide to Macronutrients, and it's linked in the description below. It's the same guide that I've used to help women like Christy, who went from feeling unsure to stepping into full leadership in her life and in our WarriorBabe community. She didn't just chase a number on the scale. She built strength, confidence and identity. Or Valerie, who at 49 felt lost in the quiet of an empty house and the comfort of nightly snacks and drinks. She flipped the script, ditched the guilt, picked up the weights and reclaimed her body and life. Now she's more toned, more active and more herself than ever before.
