Why does the weight come back after keto?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

Most of the fast weight you lose on keto is water, not fat. Nikkiey explains that carbs hold on to water in your body, so cutting them drops the scale quickly. The moment you eat carbs again, that water returns. Because you can't avoid carbs forever, the weight comes back.

The full answer

On Ep. 179, Nikkiey explains that for every gram of carbohydrate you eat, your body holds on to some water. She admits she may not be stating the exact ratio, but that is the mechanism. So when you step on the scale seven days into keto and see a big drop, it is mostly water leaving with the carbs. She is clear that carbs are an essential macronutrient you can't eliminate for life. She adds that restrictive diets also deprive you of calories and nutrients, which she says leads to muscle loss and a slowed metabolism. That leaves you in a worse spot when you go back to your regular eating.

On Ep. 233 she walks through the cycle. Keto works if you follow it strictly, but eventually your cravings go through the roof and you binge. Or life happens, or you simply want to enjoy carbs again, and you stop. The weight returns, sometimes with extra. Then you remember it worked last time and start over. Nikkiey says she lived this too. Community member Emily did keto for about 10 months and said that once she went back to eating normally, the weight came right back, "if not like double time."

So the regain isn't a willpower problem. It's the plan. Nikkiey's alternative is to keep carbs and learn how much to eat. In her video comparing keto, Weight Watchers and macros, she makes these points:

  • Carbs fuel your workouts and recovery, which helps you build muscle.
  • More muscle means a faster metabolism.
  • Balancing protein, carbs and fats lets you fit in foods you love without cutting out food groups.

Her test for any approach is simple. If you can't eat this way for the rest of your life, the weight will come back.

Why don't fad diets work long term?

Fad diets don't work long term because they are built for fast results through extreme restriction, not for real life. Nikkiey explains that when the program ends, the foods you cut out come back, often more than before, and so does the weight. Nothing teaches you how to keep the results afterward.

How do I stop losing and regaining the same 10 pounds?

Stop treating it as a 30-day diet and start building habits, beliefs and skills that outlast the plan. Nikkiey explains that the same 10 pounds keep coming back when old habits return after a diet ends, when you quit before your body responds, and when nobody teaches you how to move from fat loss into maintenance.

    Is keto sustainable long term?

No, not for most women. Nikkiey explains that keto can work if you follow it strictly, but it isn't designed to be sustainable. Almost nobody gives up carbs for the rest of their life, going in and out of ketosis stalls progress, and cutting carbs can make building muscle much harder.
