What is the easiest way to hit my protein goal every day?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
The easiest way is to plan tomorrow's meals the night before, then split your protein across every meal so each one carries a manageable number. Nikkiey's 150-gram day breaks into five meals of roughly 24 to 38 grams each. Build those meals around lean sources like chicken, egg whites, lean ground beef, fish, tofu or protein powder.

The full answer
If you keep coming up short on protein, the problem is usually the approach, not your willpower. Nikkiey explains that the most common mistake she sees is planning as you go: eat breakfast, log it, eat lunch, log it, and by evening you're 40 grams of protein short and inventing strange recipes to catch up. She calls it macro hoarding. On Ep. 158, her client Lisa puts it bluntly: if you wing it, you'll go over on carbs and fats and you will not meet your protein goals. Lisa plans her whole day the night before, and says it takes her less than five minutes once you're used to it.
Once the day is planned, spread the protein out. Big daily numbers feel impossible; small meal-sized numbers don't. In Nikkiey's 150-gram, 2,000-calorie day, her five meals land at 31, 27, 27, about 25 and 38 grams. Lisa eats six meals with protein at every one, and says that's why hitting her number feels easy.
Then choose foods that do the heavy lifting. Nikkiey recommends lean sources that bring protein without much fat or carbohydrate:
- Chicken, ground turkey, lean ground beef and lean fish
- Egg whites
- Tofu and tempeh (tempeh has some carbs) for vegetarians and vegans
- Protein powder, like the whey isolate shake Lisa has after her workout
Nikkiey also warns against the snack bars she relied on early in her own journey. They may have five grams of protein but come packed with carbs and fats, so you feel like you're eating plenty while staying nowhere near your target. Whole foods win. Lisa makes it practical by batch-cooking on Sundays, and sometimes again midweek: a big tub of ground beef, a batch of chicken and a steamed vegetable that the whole family eats from.

Protein for Women
How much protein do women over 40 need?
Most guidance on The WarriorBabe Show lands at about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day for women over 40, based on goal weight if you have a lot to lose. Nikkiey says strength-training women may need 1.2 or even 1.3. Some episodes and guests cite 0.7 grams as the floor.

Protein for Women
Does eating more protein help with fat loss?
Yes. Nikkiey explains that protein helps fat loss in three ways: your body burns more calories digesting it than carbs or fat, it protects and builds muscle while you're eating less, and it keeps you full so cravings don't derail you. She's also clear the digestion boost is small compared with exercise.

Protein for Women
How much protein do I need to lose fat and build muscle at the same time?
Nikkiey's range is about 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day, so roughly 150 grams if you weigh 150 pounds. If you have a lot to lose, she bases it on your goal weight instead. One video also sets 100 grams a day as your minimum.
