In this video
Nikkiey Stott has been in fitness since she was 16. She has run marathons and done triathlons, but none of it gave her the body she has at 51. Before 47, every time she got lean it came with exhaustion, food anxiety and obsessive tracking. When perimenopause and then menopause arrived, the things she had done for decades stopped working. She explains that her body wasn't broken. It was reacting to years of stress and doing too much, and it was telling her to slow down.
In this video she walks through the three changes she made. She quit cardio completely. She made strength training the foundation instead of something squeezed in after long cardio sessions. And she stopped trying to eat as little as possible. Now she tracks only protein, aiming for about 150 grams a day, and she eats more than she ever has.
If you're over 40, doing everything and still not seeing results, this is a short, practical look at what doing less and eating more looked like for one woman. Nikkiey says those changes took her from depression, gut issues, hair loss and poor sleep to being leaner, healthier and more energized.
Key takeaways
- Nikkiey quit cardio completely, and she says her body started responding the moment she cut it out, after years of holding on to it as her identity.
- Removing cardio only worked because she replaced it with strength training, which changed her body composition.
- Don't leave strength training until after long cardio sessions: by then you're already depleted and your body is still trying to recover instead of building muscle.
- She explains that without muscle your metabolism slows and you store more fat, so she made lifting the foundation of her training.
- With strength training first, she spent a fraction of the time in the gym and her hunger cues became more intuitive because she wasn't starving to replace lost glycogen.
- She stopped trying to eat as little as possible and burn as much as possible, because barely eating wasn't moving the weight.
- She now tracks only protein, aiming for about 150 grams a day, and finds other things balance out naturally when protein is in.
- She says women can lose up to 1% of muscle mass per year, and protein is critical to slow or reverse that.
Questions answered
Do you need to do cardio to get lean after 40?
Nikkiey thought cardio was the only thing keeping her lean, but she quit it completely and says her body finally started to respond. She stresses that it only worked because she replaced cardio with strength training.
Why should strength training come before cardio for women over 40?
Nikkiey explains that if you lift after long cardio sessions you're already depleted, and your body can't build muscle because it's still recovering from the cardio. Without muscle, she says, your metabolism slows and you store more fat.
How much protein does Nikkiey Stott eat?
She aims for about 150 grams of protein a day and says she is eating more now than she ever has before.
Do I need to track all my macros to get lean?
Nikkiey now tracks only protein. She says it gives her much more freedom, and when she gets her protein in, other things start to balance out naturally.
Why is eating very little not working for me after 40?
For years Nikkiey ate as little as possible and burned as much as possible, and the weight wouldn't budge. She says her body was reacting to years of stress and doing too much, especially as she entered perimenopause and menopause, and things changed when she started eating more with a focus on protein.

Strength Training for Women
Should I do cardio before or after lifting weights?
Lift first. Nikkiey explains that doing cardio before weights burns through your pre-workout meal and leaves you depleted for the most demanding part of the workout, so cardio goes last. On Ep. 291, Maggie Topham goes further: keep them separate, and if you only have time for one, choose strength training and walk later.

Full transcript
Nikkiey: I've been in the fitness space since I was 16 years old. I've run marathons, I've done triathlons, but nothing got me the body I have right now. And the wild part: I did less, I ate more, and I finally feel good in my body. So if you're over 40, tired of trying everything, and wondering why nothing seems to work anymore, I'm walking you through exactly what I changed so you can copy it and see the same results. Let's get into it.
Every single time I got lean before 47, it came with exhaustion that wouldn't go away, constant food anxiety, wondering if I could afford to eat something, and obsessive tracking. But here's what I didn't understand. My body wasn't failing. Over time, it was reacting to years of stress and decades of doing too much. And when I was entering perimenopause and then menopause, the things I'd been doing for decades suddenly stopped working, no matter how hard I pushed. I thought I was broken, but my body wasn't giving up. It was screaming at me to slow down.
So let's dive into the first change I made. Change one: I quit cardio completely. Cardio was my identity, and I continued to hold on to it because, like many women, I thought that it was the only thing needed for me to stay lean. At the time, I didn't realize cardio was the issue. But the moment I cut it out, my body finally started to respond in a way it had been needing for years. My soft, tired body started to change. But removing cardio only worked because I replaced it with something else, something that completely changed my body composition.
Change number two: strength training became the foundation. Strength training was something I fit in after long cardio sessions, not something I prioritized at all. And here's the problem with putting strength training last, especially after 40. You're already depleted by the time you touch a weight. Your body can't build muscle because it's still trying to recover from the cardio. Without muscle, your metabolism slows down, which means you store more fat. And no matter how much time I put in, the results just didn't reflect the effort. So I flipped the script entirely and made strength training the foundation.
And immediately, here's what changed. I spent a fraction of the time in the gym. My hunger cues became much more intuitive. I wasn't starving as my body was trying to make up for the lost glycogen. I couldn't believe the change I saw, especially in the way I felt. But none of this would have mattered if I'd kept eating the way I was eating before. And this is where most women over 40 get really stuck.
Change three: I stopped trying to eat as little as possible. For years, my approach to food was simple: eat as little as possible and burn as much as possible. Even though I was barely eating, the weight wouldn't budge. But everything changed when I made one simple shift. Now I only track one thing, and it's protein. Just tracking protein allowed me so much more freedom. And I knew if I got my protein in, other things started to balance out naturally. Women can lose up to 1% of muscle mass per year. Protein is critical to slow or reverse this. These days, I aim for about 150 grams of protein a day, and I'm eating more now than I have ever before.
And if you've been struggling to figure out what actually works for your body, especially when it comes to eating enough without gaining weight, that's exactly why we created the Macro Method for women over 40. This approach has helped thousands of women stop stressing about food, stop starving themselves, and finally enjoy what they're eating while still getting lean. The link is in the description.
Everything I just shared took me from battling depression, worsening gut issues, constant hair loss, and sleep that never felt restorative, to being leaner, healthier, and more energized at 51 years old.
And if you're watching this and wondering what foods actually work for your body right now, the first step is clarity. I've built a short quiz to help you figure out what your body needs right now and where to focus first. Just recently, I was talking to a group of WarriorBabes who explained exactly what they've been going through and how they have a better relationship with food. They're not guessing. They know exactly what to eat and how it's going to make them feel. It makes them stress so much less, obsess so much less, and actually enjoy their food and how they feel when they know they're getting the nutrients they need. These women are feeling better and are leaner and stronger than they've ever been.
So if you're ready to take the next step, just click the link in the description and take the two-minute quiz. Thanks for watching.
