If you've been told menopause means your metabolism is doomed, Nikkiey Stott wants you to know that isn't the whole story. In this video she walks through the four habits she puts first for women over 40 who want to burn fat again: strength training, protein at every meal, reverse dieting instead of starving yourself, and protecting your sleep. None of them involve extreme dieting or two-hour cardio sessions.
Nikkiey explains that muscle burns more calories at rest than fat, that women naturally lose muscle after 40 unless they train consistently, and that chronic under-eating can leave your body holding on to fat. Her fix is simple: lift three times a week with full-body compound moves, aim for about 30 grams of protein per meal, add calories back slowly, and get seven to eight hours of quality sleep.
She finishes by sorting the rest of the advice out there into three groups. Water, meal timing, caffeine and cold exposure are small extras once the basics are in place. Waist trainers, low-calorie diets, fat-burning teas and endless cardio are hype that won't get you the results you're after.
Key takeaways
- Strength train three times a week with full-body compound movements like squats, deadlifts, shoulder presses and push-ups instead of long sessions on the elliptical or StairMaster.
- Nikkiey explains that muscle burns more calories at rest than fat, and that after 40 your body loses muscle unless you train consistently.
- Too much cardio can speed up muscle loss, so don't pour all your effort into more cardio.
- Aim for 30 grams of protein at every meal, or one gram per pound of your goal body weight, using foods like eggs, turkey, salmon and lean chicken.
- If you've been under-eating, increase your calories slowly, adding 50 to 100 calories per week from whole foods like protein and healthy fats while keeping protein high.
- Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep in a dark, cold room, and put your phone away an hour before bed.
- Water, meal timing, caffeine and cold exposure can help a little once the basics are in place, but they are fine-tuning, not the foundation.
- Skip waist trainers, low-calorie diets, fat-burning teas and supplements, and endless cardio, which Nikkiey says do very little for real fat loss.
Questions answered
How often should I strength train to boost my metabolism in menopause?
Nikkiey recommends strength training three times a week with full-body compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, shoulder presses and push-ups. She says this type of training can keep your metabolism elevated for up to 48 hours after your workout.
How much protein should I eat per meal during menopause?
Nikkiey suggests aiming for 30 grams of protein at every meal, or one gram per pound of your goal body weight. She says you don't need steak at every meal and can add protein to meals you already eat, like eggs and turkey at breakfast, salmon at lunch and chicken at dinner.
How fast should I add calories back if I've been under-eating?
Nikkiey's approach is to increase calories slowly each week, adding 50 to 100 calories per week from whole foods like protein and healthy fats while keeping protein high.
Why can poor sleep make menopause belly fat harder to lose?
Nikkiey explains that sleep controls hunger hormones, fat storage and mood, that lack of sleep means more cortisol and more belly fat, and that sleep deprivation makes you crave sugar and carbs the next day. She recommends seven to eight hours of quality sleep.
Do waist trainers or fat-burning teas help you lose weight in menopause?
No. Nikkiey says waist trainers do not burn fat or change your shape long term, and fat-burning teas and supplements are mostly marketing with little science behind them.

Nikkiey: If you think menopause means your metabolism is doomed and weight loss is impossible, you've been lied to. I've helped over 20,000 women over 40 finally burn fat again by rebuilding their metabolism, all without extreme dieting or two-hour cardio sessions. So in this video, I'll walk you through the four real, science-backed hacks to speed up your metabolism during menopause so you can lose stubborn belly fat and finally feel like yourself again. If you skip this, you'll keep trying the same advice that was never meant for your body in the first place.
Let's fix that now with the first metabolism hack.
Hack number one: strength training, which equals your metabolic multiplier. Here's something many women never hear. The moment you stop strength training is the moment your metabolism begins to slow down. That is because muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does. But after 40, your body naturally starts to lose muscle unless you train consistently. Doing too much cardio can actually accelerate muscle loss. And without enough muscle, your body slows down and becomes less efficient at burning fat.
So instead of pouring all your effort into more cardio with little return, here is what you are going to do instead to finally multiply your results. Strength train three times a week using full-body compound movements. Focus on things like squats, deadlifts, shoulder presses and push-ups. Not 45 minutes on the elliptical or the StairMaster. This type of training keeps your metabolism elevated for up to 48 hours after your workout, even while you're sleeping.
But building muscle alone is not enough. What you eat, along with how you train, plays a massive role in how much fat you actually burn. Which brings us to the next hack.
Hack number two: have protein at every meal. You probably already know that protein is important for building muscle. But what most women over 40 do not realize is this: not eating enough protein is one of the biggest reasons your metabolism slows down and your body starts losing muscle. Protein is thermogenic, meaning it takes more energy to digest, which helps you burn more calories. It also helps protect your muscle as you lose weight. But if you are not eating enough, your body cannot rebuild or recover properly.
Here's the good news, though. You do not need a ribeye steak at every single meal. You can simply include protein in the meals you are already eating without making it complicated or extreme. Aim for 30 grams of protein at every meal, or one gram per pound of your goal body weight. Use foods like eggs and turkey for breakfast, grilled salmon for lunch, and lean chicken for dinner. You will stay fuller longer and you're going to reduce your cravings naturally throughout the day.
More protein will not make you bulky. That is a myth. But do you know what will make fat loss harder? Eating too little. That slows your metabolism and keeps your body stuck. So let's get into the next hack that solves this for good.
Hack number three: reverse dieting. Stop starving yourself. After 40, the idea that starving yourself will help you lose fat could not be further from the truth. Eating too little is actually one of the biggest reasons your body holds on to fat instead of burning it. Chronic calorie restriction, not eating enough, will slow down your metabolism as your body tries to protect itself. It will enter into starvation mode. You feel tired, you feel moody and you feel frustrated, but at the same time, you don't see the scale move. When your body does not feel safe, it's going to hold on to fat instead of burning it.
So the solution is not to eat less. It is to eat smarter. Begin slowly increasing your calories each week and keeping your protein high. Just adding 50 to 100 calories per week from whole foods like protein and healthy fats is going to signal to your body that it is safe, and it's going to start burning fat again for you.
But none of this will work if you are still ignoring the one silent metabolism killer that almost no one talks about. So let's dive into that next.
Hack number four: sleep, the overlooked metabolism killer. Sleep controls your hunger hormones, fat storage and even your mood. Lack of sleep means more cortisol, which in turn will give you more belly fat. Sleep deprivation makes you crave sugar and carbs the next day. So aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep. Create a dark, cold sleep environment and ditch that phone an hour before bed. It's going to give you more efficient sleep at night. Magnesium glycinate or a guided sleep meditation can help you if you're struggling to fall asleep.
Now, there are plenty of tips and tricks out there, but not all of them are worth your time. So let's quickly go over the metabolism strategies that truly work and the ones you can leave behind.
Let's be real. Some things sound helpful, but they barely move the needle when it comes to fat loss and your metabolism. If you truly want to make a difference in how your body looks and feels, here is where your focus should be: put your priority into strength training, secondly into reverse dieting, then protein at every single meal, and focusing on your sleep.
Some of the strategies I'm about to list are not essential, but if you have a bit of extra time, they can support your results in very small ways. They are great for fine-tuning once you have the basics down. Drink more water. That can help with energy, digestion and managing your hunger. Meal timing may help some people with appetite control throughout the day. Caffeine can boost energy and fat oxidation, but the effects are mild. Cold exposure, like cold plunges, may support recovery and metabolic health, but results vary there as well.
And some of the things I'm going to list are commonly hyped but do very little for real fat loss or metabolic improvement. They may require extreme effort or deliver zero measurable results. Waist trainers do not burn fat or change your shape long term. Low-calorie diets often backfire by slowing your metabolism down and increasing your cravings throughout the day. Fat-burning teas and supplements are mostly marketing with little science behind them. And doing more and more and more cardio will only lead to burnout, not better results.
Just to prove the four strategies shared in this video really do work, one of our clients, Karen, said this: "I started this journey thinking I just wanted to look better. But what I found was strength, energy and confidence I hadn't felt since my 30s. At 54, I feel unstoppable."
So if you want to eat in a way that actually supports fat loss, strength and energy after 40, I created something just for you. The Macro Method is the exact framework I use with Karen and over 20,000 women. No cutting carbs, no starving. Make sure to click the first link in the description to get started.
And now you know the real hacks to boosting your metabolism during menopause. But if you're still wondering what you should actually eat in a day to burn belly fat after 40, I made an entire video showing you exactly what a full day of fat loss meals looks like. So watch that next video right here and build your meal plan with me. See you in that video.
