How do I know my metabolism has recovered from dieting?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

Your metabolism has recovered when you reach your true maintenance calories, the amount you can eat without gaining or losing weight, and your body is sending the right signals. Nikkiey points to better sleep, mood, energy and digestion, rising strength, fewer food thoughts and hunger cues returning. That number is usually much higher than where you started.

The full answer

On Ep. 354, Nikkiey describes the finish line as your true maintenance calories. Her example: a woman maintaining her weight on 1,100 calories might, after a successful reverse, be maintaining on 1,800 to 2,000. That higher ceiling is the point. When you later go into a fat loss phase, you have far more room to create a deficit without bottoming out at 1,300 or 1,400 calories and feeling exhausted. She adds a telltale sign you are not there yet: if you try a cut and your body just isn't having it, it hasn't healed.

Because the scale doesn't tell the whole story, Nikkiey leans heavily on biofeedback. On Ep. 307 and Ep. 148, the signs she lists include:

  • Sleeping more through the night instead of tossing and turning
  • Better mood and energy
  • Improved digestion
  • Strength going up in the gym
  • Fewer constant thoughts about food
  • More daily activity
  • Hunger cues coming back, especially if you'd forgotten what hunger feels like

She calls these improving markers a clear indicator that your metabolism is repairing, even when you can't put a number on it.

Give it time. On Ep. 148, Nikkiey suggests holding your maintenance numbers for around four weeks once you get there, though it could be two or three, as long as the signals are coming back. On Ep. 307 she says that if you've been dieting for years, you might need a true 6 to 12 months of repair before another deficit, and on Ep. 354 she notes it could take months. Her advice is to detach from the scale during this phase. If you never felt hungry and your body refused to budge, that wasn't a willpower problem. It was a plan that kept you underfed, and Nikkiey recommends having a coach or professional guide you through the process.

How long does it take to repair your metabolism?

It depends on how adapted your metabolism is. Nikkiey's ranges: about six to 12 weeks for mild adaptation after a few months of moderate dieting, closer to three months after a year or more of restriction, and six months to a year after many years of chronic dieting. Your body's response sets the timeline, not a calendar.

Will I gain weight when I start eating more?

Probably a little, and that's expected. Nikkiey explains that when you start eating more during a retrain or reverse diet, your weight will usually fluctuate about two to five pounds from water, glycogen, food volume and salt, not fat. If the gain keeps climbing or holds around five pounds, the increase was likely too fast.

Why didn't my reverse diet work?

Nikkiey says it most likely did work. You just didn't stay in it long enough for your body to heal. Many women try a reverse diet for two to six weeks, panic when the scale goes up, and jump back into a deficit. If you've dieted for years, she says repair can take 6 to 12 months.
