What is a good high-protein breakfast for women over 40?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

A good high-protein breakfast for women over 40 pairs protein with carbs. Nikkiey Stott's examples include egg whites with one whole egg and a bagel or oatmeal, a Greek yogurt and granola bowl, a protein oatmeal shake, or cottage cheese with fruit. Breakfast should anchor your protein target for the whole day.

The full answer

Nikkiey explains that after 45, and especially into perimenopause and menopause, women lose muscle faster, so she builds every meal around protein, starting with breakfast. Her own go-to is egg whites plus one whole egg, scrambled or as an omelet, with a bagel and cream cheese. She says the protein and comforting carbs keep her full and cut cravings, and she has eaten some version of it almost every morning for two years. Another favorite is eggs with plenty of egg whites, oatmeal and a little fruit.

Other options she builds and tracks:

  • Siggi's yogurt (about 200 g) with 30 g granola and a tablespoon of peanut butter, about 429 calories and 27 g protein
  • 40 g quick oats mixed with a packet of instant oatmeal and 150 g egg whites
  • A blended protein oatmeal shake with a little over 30 g protein
  • Cottage cheese with raspberries or banana and a drizzle of honey. Blend it if you dislike the texture.

If you train in the morning, she suggests skipping the peanut butter. A low-fat meal of protein and carbs is enough to power your workout.

Watch out for the healthy breakfast that is not one. Nikkiey points to granola, fruit and almond milk, which has maybe 10 grams of protein. She calls that a setup for a crash that women then blame on their age. If you are not hungry in the morning, she says that is often a sign of chronic under-eating. Starting with protein can feel uncomfortable for a week or two, but she says most women adapt within two to three weeks.

Her last rule is to treat these breakfasts like a uniform, not a menu. Eating the same simple structure most days and swapping things for variety is what makes the results last.

Should I avoid fat in my meals before and after a workout?

Not entirely, but keep it low. Nikkiey keeps fat on the lower end in the meal before and the meal after training because fat, at 9 calories per gram, takes about twice as long to digest and can slow your use of the protein and carbs that fuel your lift and start recovery. Eat your fats at other meals.

Is it okay to eat the same meals every day to lose fat?

Yes. Nikkiey says eating the same meals every day is one of the most effective ways to lose fat. It makes your macros easier to hit, keeps calories consistent, and helps steady digestion and hunger. Fat loss and body recomposition thrive on consistency. Keep the base the same and make small swaps when you want variety.

What is the fastest way to batch cook protein for the week?

The fastest way is to put a large bag of frozen meat in a slow cooker or Instant Pot with a little salsa on top. Four to eight pounds cooks in under an hour and covers four to five days of salads, wraps and protein bowls. Keep the flavor neutral so it works with anything.
