Should You Track Net Carbs or Total Carbs on Macros?

Chapters

This video is part ofMacros & Macro Tracking208 lessons · where to start, common questions and more

In this video

In this live Q&A, Nikkiey Stott answers a question many women run into when they start tracking macros: should you adjust carbs for fiber and sugar, the way keto counts net carbs? Her answer is no. Every carb is a carb, and she counts all of them. In her view, tracking net carbs makes your carb intake swing from day to day, while counting everything keeps things consistent. She also explains why most of your carbs shouldn't come from vegetables. Whole-food carbs like oatmeal, rice, bread, bagels, sweet potatoes and fruit are what fuel your workouts.

Before the questions, Nikkiey lays out where new members should go for answers. Start with the app, then the FAQ resource page, then the weekly Q&As. Support is only for technical issues. She also asks you not to guess. A wrong assumption can quietly cost you weeks or months of effort.

She closes with some perspective. Almost six years into her own journey, she is still working on parts of her body, and photos from two years in look very different from today. Take starter photos, focus on small daily wins and stop comparing your day one to someone else's day 1,800. She finishes with a quick answer on water: aim for a gallon of plain water, and count greens drinks and protein shakes as a bonus.

Key takeaways

  • Count every carbohydrate you eat instead of tracking net carbs, because fiber and sugar still count as carbs.
  • Nikkiey explains that tracking net carbs makes your carb intake fluctuate day to day, while counting all carbs keeps your intake consistent.
  • Get most of your carbs from whole foods like oatmeal, rice, bread, bagels, cereal, sweet potatoes and fruit rather than vegetables, since those are the carbs that fuel your workouts.
  • How you time your carbohydrates across the day matters most, and that timing is covered in the WarriorBabe app.
  • If you're new, go through the app first, then the FAQ resource page, then the weekly live Q&As, and save support for technical app issues only.
  • Ask for clarification instead of assuming you're doing it right, because a wrong assumption can leave you weeks or months off track.
  • Expect changing your body composition to take years, not two or four months, and take starter photos so you can see the difference at six months and beyond.
  • Aim for a gallon of plain water a day, and treat water from greens drinks or protein shakes as a bonus rather than part of the goal.

Questions answered

Should I track net carbs or total carbs when counting macros?

Nikkiey recommends tracking total carbs. Every carb is a carb, and she says net carbs make your daily carb intake fluctuate, while counting all of them keeps it consistent.

Do fiber and sugar count as carbs?

Yes. Nikkiey says that even though some people digest fiber differently, it is still a carbohydrate, and sugar, including the sugar in white rice, white flour and white bread, is still a carbohydrate too.

Should most of my carbs come from vegetables?

No. Nikkiey says most of your carbs should come from whole foods like oatmeal, rice, bread, bagels, cereal, sweet potatoes and fruit, because many people can't digest all that vegetable fiber and vegetables don't give you the carbs you need for your workouts.

Does water mixed into a greens drink or protein shake count toward my water intake?

Nikkiey doesn't count it. She aims for a gallon of plain water and treats her greens drink and post-workout protein shake as extra, a bonus on top of the gallon.

How long does it take to change your body composition?

Nikkiey says it doesn't happen in two or four months. It takes a lot of time and patience, and she is still working on parts of her body almost six years into her own journey.

Nikkiey: What's up, you guys? I am so sorry. Hopefully we can kick off this live again. My Wi-Fi just completely shut down, and I am literally connected to my personal hotspot right now. Oh, man, that stinks. Anyway, welcome, you guys. I am going to start this whole thing over again, because we do post all of this to our channel so that anybody who tunes in after we're done live can watch the entire thing. So let's just start this thing all over again.

Welcome, babes, as you're tuning in now to this new live video. Please let me know that you're here. Hopefully we can get the same attendance that we had on the previous one, so everybody knows I'm back live. At least comment. Let me know that you're here and that you're tuning back in. It does help. The more you comment, the more it pushes our video to the top of the Facebook group, so others can see that we're back and live and everybody can tune in. And just a friendly reminder: if you're catching this live after it's been completed, remember to use the hashtag replay and keep all the questions that pertain to this Q&A in one area, so that Kate can come back in and answer any questions that were left after this live is complete.

So hopefully you guys are tuning back in. Our numbers are getting back up there. So please smash the like button and comment that you're here right now, so it gets our video to the top of the Facebook group and other babes can see that we're live again. And if you had questions and posted them in the last video, carry them over into this live video. You've got to love technology. You've got to freaking love it. So bring your questions into this one and we'll start this Q&A in just a few seconds. I don't think anything can happen to my personal hotspot. That's why it's great that I have it in situations like this.

Hopefully my Wi-Fi turns back on, because I have all my other community calls later tonight. But anyway, I'm excited to be here with you guys and run through this Q&A. Hello, Heather. What's up, Kimberly? What's up, Laura? What's up, babes? If you have any questions, leave them in the comment area and I'll start answering in just a few seconds. But again, let's give a huge welcome to anybody who's new. Let's change it up this time, since I just said it in the last video. If you are new, give me the wave emoji. Let me and the community see your name. That way, when we see your name inside the community, we know that you're new and we can help you with anything you need.

You're literally a part of a community of thousands of women. We're all on the same journey together, working toward the same goal: getting toned and becoming a stronger, more confident version of ourselves. So remember, WarriorBabe is where strong is the new sexy. And I am so freaking excited that our community is so freaking amazing. You guys all rock. It's really starting to pick up, which is so cool. You're all sharing your successes and your wins, which is so awesome to see inside our community, because it gives the new babes some fuel and motivation to keep going. And veteran babes, you're seeing these new babes come in and getting excited because there's new blood inside the community. So super stoked for you guys.

So if you have any questions, start leaving them in the comment area and we'll get the Q&A going in just a few seconds. The numbers may be a little lower. I'm not getting the same numbers we had in the other video, but that happens. Technology cuts out sometimes. So if you have any questions, now's the time to get them answered while I have some time to spend with you.

One thing I do want to talk about before we dive into any questions is questions. Don't be that person. If you're new to our community, please don't come into the Facebook community and start flooding the group with questions that can be easily answered by taking some time to go through the application, getting yourself grounded and setting foundations for yourself by looking at the material you have available. You literally have all the tools and all the resources that have helped thousands of women transform their bodies, get toned and feel more confident inside that application. What it comes down to now is you putting in the work.

That's the big key factor: you putting in the work. This has worked for thousands of women. It can work for you too. You just have to put in the work. So step one, if you're new, take the time to go through the application. I guarantee 95% of your starter questions can be answered there or in our frequently asked questions resource page, which is the link I have somewhere around this live video right now. You can click on that. My team has organized that entire database to help you with macro questions, workout questions, how to use the app, technical things, support questions, all that kind of stuff. You can always click that link, find it on the live Q&As, or go to the home screen of your application and click on Need Help, and you'll find the entire frequently asked questions resource page there as well.

So step one, take the time to go through the application and really lay down your foundation. Step two, go to the frequently asked questions resource page. Step three, attend these Q&As. I can't stress that enough. I show up here every single week inside this community to answer any questions you have. Don't be intimidated by me. Ask the questions that you want clarification on. I'm here to help you. I'm here to be a part of your journey, and coming here every Wednesday is how I can do that, by answering any questions you have. And then Kate answers any questions that were left behind. So even if you can't make these live Q&As, still ask your questions, and Kate comes back to answer them.

And then the last spot you should all be going... Why am I not getting any questions yet? Come on, guys. I know our numbers aren't as high as the last video, but this is a Q&A. What was I saying? Questions. Support should be the last place you go to get your questions answered. My support team is not going to answer anything macro related or fitness related. It's more for "Hey, how come I can't get into my app?" questions. Oh, I thought I just froze there for a second. Make sure you're taking the time to go through the course and the application. That's going to help with 95% of your starter questions.

So that being said, now that I've repeated that from the first video I started doing live before I got kicked off, here we are. Sally has a question for me. And if you do have questions, there's no silly or stupid question. Ask me. I'm happy to clarify anything you need clarified.

"What are your thoughts on adjusting carbs based on fiber and sugar?" Every carb is a carb. That's why I say not to track net carbs like you do with keto. You want to track every single carbohydrate. That's how I feel about it. That's my whole methodology around it. Some people do digest fiber differently than other people, but it's still considered a carbohydrate. Sugar is still considered a carbohydrate. There's sugar inside white rice, white flour, white bread, anything you eat that's a white-based or flour-based product. That sugar is still a carbohydrate. It's just a matter of when you use those carbohydrates throughout the day, which matters the most. Again, that's inside your application as well, talking about the timing of carbohydrates. But yeah, that's my methodology around it.

You don't want to do net carbs, because that causes your carbohydrate intake to fluctuate on a daily basis. There's no consistency there. Counting every carb as a true carb helps your body with consistency.

And now that we're speaking about it, I'm thinking out loud from Sally's question: the majority of your carbohydrates should not be coming from vegetables. You want to focus on getting whole carbohydrates from oatmeal, rice, breads, bagels, the cereals that I share with you guys, sweet potatoes, fruits. You don't want all your carbohydrates coming from vegetables because, like I said, not many people can digest that fiber, and you're not getting the true amount of carbohydrates you want for your workouts. The carbs that give you energy are the complex and simple carbs, the whole foods, not the vegetables.

So the majority of your carbs should not be coming from... oh, smash that like button if this makes sense, guys. I see you doing it. You want the majority of your carbs to come from whole foods. Just like I say with proteins, they should come from whole foods, and fats should come from whole foods. There's really nothing... oh, MCT oil. That's a concentrated fat. It's not a food. But anyway, always go to whole foods.

Beautiful. I see the like button being smashed. Cool, guys. Smashing it brings visibility up. Visibility is increasing. So awesome. And probably a lot of babes who thought I was done after getting kicked off my Wi-Fi are coming back in and seeing that we're live, because our video is staying toward the top of the Facebook group, which is good.

Anybody else have any other questions for me? Now is the time. Join Sally's train. Ask me some questions so that I can help you. Remember, you don't want to assume that you know the answer to your question. You don't want to assume that you're doing it the right way. The best thing you can do is get clarification from me. Because if you're assuming, you could be a week, two weeks, two months in, and that assumption turns out to be wrong, and you could be doing something completely off from what you should be doing. So ask your questions, you guys. I'm not going to bite your head off. I'll give you tough love. I will bite your head off.

You guys, I'm not going to waste my time or your time just looking pretty on this Q&A right now. I think we did lose some visibility from my Wi-Fi crashing and me being on my personal hotspot. So if you don't have any more questions, remember, you can always leave them after this live Q&A is complete, and Kate will come back in and answer them. Since I'm not getting any more, I'm going to close down our Q&A right now. It's been a lot of fun hanging out with you guys, getting kicked off the Wi-Fi, having to restart the whole live, and then being here to answer Sally's question.

So everybody remember, it comes down to your work ethic. It comes down to how much you really want to accomplish this goal. How much do you really want to change your body composition? And remember what I say: it's not going to happen overnight. It's not going to happen in two months. It's not going to happen in four months. You're changing your body composition. That takes a heck of a lot of time, a lot of patience, and you putting in the work on a daily basis. Those small wins add up to the big goal you're working to accomplish.

And let me tell you, I'm almost six years into my journey, and there are still aspects of my body that I'm working on. I got a memory on my IG from four years ago, a photo of me, and I was blown away. That was two years into my journey. Two years in, my legs weren't what they are today. My shoulders weren't as capped as they are today. It comes down to you. Trust me, accept that building muscle and changing your body composition is going to take a long time. Building muscle is not something that happens overnight. Changing your body composition is not something that happens overnight. I'm still working on it six years later.

So fall in love with your journey. Fall in love with every step of it. Be patient and look at the small things, the small wins, on a daily basis. That's what matters the most. And always remember to take your starter photos, because I can guarantee you that six months from now, if you're putting in the work, you're going to see a drastic difference. That's going to motivate you to go another six months. Then you'll have a year photo. You see a lot of WarriorBabes share their year photo. It's just a year. Don't get me wrong, you can still accomplish a lot in a year, but then those WarriorBabes think, all right, what can I do in another year? Then you have starter photos to two years, then two to three, three to four, four to five, and on and on.

Yup. Now is when I'm seeing my body composition change, two years later. When I saw that on IG, that was two years into my journey, and I couldn't freaking believe I looked like that. So much has changed from then to now, which is a four-year time period. You can always go onto my IG and scroll down to see where I was, because it's not where I am today. So remember that. Don't compare your day one to my day 1,800 and so on. Just focus on your journey. Fall in love with your journey.

Valerie: "Silly question. Water intake question. When you mix your Opti-Greens, do you count that as water intake or no?" No, because I focus just on this, my water. If I can get this down, that's a win. Anything outside of that is extra. I always strive for a gallon, and then I have my Opti-Greens and my post-workout protein. To me, that's extra. If I can get extra, that's freaking great. Your goal is definitely a gallon, but look at those as a bonus. If you can get the bonus, that's bomb.com.

All right, guys, I'm going to tune out. It was awesome hanging out with you. Blueprint Babes, I'll see you next at 7 p.m. And VIP, I'll see you at 9 p.m. Bye, everybody. Have a good rest of your evening. Bye.
