Is granola a healthy breakfast for weight loss?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

Usually not. Nikkiey says granola is marketed as health food but often works like a sugar bomb in wellness packaging, with 12 to 16 grams of sugar per serving, and most people eat more than one. Paired with fruit and almond milk, it may give you only about 10 grams of protein.

The full answer

Nikkiey's point is that eating clean and eating optimized are two different things. On The WarriorBabe Show, she says granola belongs with flavored yogurt, orange juice, smoothie bowls, and oatmeal with brown sugar and dried fruit. These foods sit in the healthy aisle, but they're often high in sugar. When she asks WarriorBabe clients what they eat for breakfast, the answer is often granola with fruit, a smoothie with bananas and honey, or flavored yogurt with a granola bar. Added up, that can be 35 to 50 grams of sugar before 9am.

The bigger problem is what's missing. Nikkiey says a typical granola, fruit and almond milk breakfast has maybe 10 grams of protein. She calls that a setup for a crash, not a meal. Without protein on board, energy drops, brain fog rolls in, and by lunch you're starving and reaching for whatever is fastest. Then you blame your willpower or your age. She says willpower has nothing to do with it. The breakfast was the problem. In her menopause belly fat video, she also says these sugary morning foods spike insulin first thing and push your body toward storing belly fat.

Her rule is that after 40, every breakfast should have 25 to 35 grams of protein. Here's one example she gives:

  • 150 grams of egg whites plus two whole eggs
  • spinach
  • a full bagel with avocado

She puts that at roughly 35 grams of protein, with healthy fats to keep you full through the morning and no sugar spike. She suggests picking a few breakfasts like this and treating them as a uniform you put on every morning, not a menu you think about each day. If granola is a favorite, the takeaway isn't that you failed. The meal just wasn't built to hold you until lunch.

Yes. On The WarriorBabe Show, Nikkiey says to eat something before you lift, however early. A small protein-and-carb snack is enough, like a banana and a protein shake. Dr. Stacy Sims suggests about 15g protein and 30g carbs. Then have a real breakfast with protein and carbs 30 to 45 minutes after training.

Is it bad to lift weights on an empty stomach?

Nikkiey doesn't call fasted lifting bad for everyone, but if your goal is to build muscle or tone up, she says it works against you. Muscle is active tissue that needs fuel, so without food your body can break down muscle for energy. Fasted cardio like walking or cycling is a different story.
