How to Build a Fitness Routine When Life Gets Chaotic

In this video

When your normal routine falls apart, your workouts and eating usually go with it. In this Sunday Rally Call, recorded on a walk during the early weeks of COVID lockdowns, Nikkiey Stott sets aside macros and supplements to talk about what she thinks matters more right now: building a routine that lets you keep showing up for yourself. Her point is simple. It's not about perfection, it's about consistency.

She shares how she handled her own upended schedule, living back at her parents' house with a busy household, and lays out three steps. First, assess your situation and find the times of day you can actually use. Second, take care of your responsibilities to work and family, but carve out time for yourself too, including at least two hours a day and a weekly meal prep. Third, commit, because how badly you want your goals decides whether excuses win.

If last week felt like a wash, Nikkiey gives you permission to erase it and start fresh. She closes with a clear challenge: don't just nod along. Meal prep, get your workout in and set your schedule for the week, because 10 to 15 minutes of planning is worth hours of success.

Key takeaways

  • If last week felt like a wash, accept it, be kind to yourself and start the new week fresh instead of dwelling on it.
  • Aim for consistency, not perfection, by showing up for yourself every day.
  • Assess your situation for a few days, watching how your household runs, so you can spot the times you can use for workouts, meal prep and planning.
  • Once your responsibilities to work, kids and partner are covered, schedule time for yourself, since everyone has the same 24 hours and at least two of them can be yours.
  • Meal prep in bulk once or twice a week instead of putting meals together day to day, then plan your meals and macros the night before.
  • Set clear goals early so you stay motivated in the first weeks, when body composition is changing even if the numbers aren't.
  • Take 10 to 15 minutes to set your weekly schedule, including when you'll work out, then follow through on it.

Questions answered

How do I stay consistent with fitness when my routine is disrupted?

Nikkiey's approach is to assess your situation first, watching how your household runs for a few days to find the times you can use. Then schedule your workouts and meal prep into those windows and commit to following through.

How much time should I set aside for myself each day?

Nikkiey says that out of the 24 hours in a day, you can focus at least two hours on yourself once your responsibilities to family and work are taken care of.

How often should I meal prep to stay on track?

She recommends meal prepping one or two times a week, keeping food in bulk in your fridge, and planning your meals and macros the night before rather than putting meals together day to day.

What should I do if last week felt like a total wash?

Don't dwell on it. Nikkiey says to accept that it happens, be kind to yourself, erase it and start the new week on the right foot.

Why do I lose motivation two weeks into a new program?

Nikkiey explains that many women lose sight of their goals when the numbers don't change quickly, even though they may be making real progress. Changing body composition doesn't happen in two weeks, so setting clear goals keeps you rooted and motivated.

Nikkiey: What's up, WarriorBabe? Hey, everybody. Nikkiey here, and welcome to our WarriorBabe Revolution Rally Call. I am so excited to be here with you. We had Easter, and we had a rally call the week before that. It was really choppy in our rally calls, so I'm excited to be here and excited to get back into the flow of lighting you guys up with some fire-breathing motivation as we move into a new week.

We will get started with our call in just a few seconds, so let the other WarriorBabes know that this has started. Go on the Facebook group and leave a comment. Let them know they want to chime in and get some fire lit under their butts for this new week we've got ahead of us. I don't know about you guys, but how's everybody feeling, being stuck at home? I'm outside right now going for a walk, because I just need to get more steps in today.

Being stuck at home during this time, thank you to everybody who is still working, still putting their butt on the line with this. I'm going to try to keep the talk about COVID to a minimum and bring some more positivity onto this call. I want to bring some fire to you guys as we move into this new week to keep your head on right during this time. Keep your consistency happening. Keep showing up for yourself.

I came in here and I was going to talk about macros. I got off the Blueprint Q&A, and I was going to talk about supplements and, as you get older, how important it is to recover after your workouts. But now I think I'm just going to chit-chat about motivation, about routine, about sticking to your routine during this time. I think you all need to hear that more than ever. So that's going to be our topic for today.

Let the other babes know this call is getting started. I'm about to lay in deep to you guys, because I think I know exactly where everybody is in this moment the world is facing. I always tend to find the positivity in situations like this because I've experienced far worse, so I want to bring that to you guys right now.

Before we dive in, I do want to give a huge welcome, because our community is on fire right now, to all of the new WarriorBabes who have joined us in this last week. You are part of an amazing community of thousands of women who are committed to becoming stronger, more confident versions of themselves. WarriorBabe is where strong is the new sexy, you guys. We are laying down the law. We are a female-only revolution at the moment, and it's just getting started.

I am excited that you are here and a part of our community. I may be biased when I say this, but it's super inspiring and super supportive. I see you guys inside the Facebook group commenting and helping everybody out, and I love seeing that, especially during this time. If you're new to WarriorBabe, we do these calls every single Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. So mark your calendars and set your alarms. Seriously, you don't want to miss out on these.

You want to immerse yourself in everything WarriorBabe. I'm telling you that because it's easy to focus on one thing and one thing only and eliminate everything else that is outside of you, or anything else that you've ever tried. You want to completely eliminate all of that, because otherwise your mind can go down rabbit holes of, well, I once did this, or I once did that, and now I'm doing this. You start to lose traction. You lose ground. So tune out everything else and just focus on WarriorBabe, because WarriorBabe gets results.

Now, before we dive into the topic I want to talk to you about: if you're new to WarriorBabe, do not ignore my Blast Off emails. They're coming to you for the first 14 days, with one task to complete each day, and they're going to set you up for long-term success. You're going to dive into establishing your goals. You're going to dive into macros. You're going to dive into workouts. Most importantly, establishing your goals.

There are people who get started on a workout program and lose sight of where they want to go two weeks in, when they're not seeing the results, when actually they're making better progress than they've probably ever seen. But just because they don't see the numbers changing, they start to lose motivation. Well, I swear to you, babes, we don't give up. We focus on the fact that this is a journey and you're changing your body composition. That shit doesn't happen in two weeks.

Setting your goals is what's going to keep you rooted in your desires and your wants, and it's going to keep the motivation high. When you don't feel like showing up for yourself, you're going to find yourself showing up anyway, because you've got goals to meet and you'll be able to accomplish them. So make sure you tune in to those Blast Off videos that are coming to you daily for the first 14 days.

If you're new, please, please take the time to go through the app you have access to. There's so much material, so many resources, so many tools to use. I want you to search through them first before you start jumping into our Facebook community and asking questions, because I guarantee you, for starter questions, you can find the answers inside the app. If they can't be found inside the app, go to our Frequently Asked Questions resource page, which is a direct link inside the app in the Need Help section. We just updated the entire platform. We had old pictures in there from our old app, so we updated the whole thing, and it's easier for you to navigate if you have specific questions.

If you can't find your answer in the app or the FAQs, then go to the Facebook group and ask the babes, hey, can you guys help me out here? I'm kind of stuck. I guarantee one of the babes will jump on it within 30 seconds.

So with all that being said, I'm going on a walk right now to get more steps in. I'm obsessed with being outside and getting more steps in. How about you guys? But it's starting to rain, so hopefully I don't get stuck in this. Anyway, let's dive into today's topic.

I was going to talk about supplements. I was going to talk about macros. But I think the most important thing about our rally calls is the mindset stuff, really getting that fire lit underneath you to move into a new week strong. That's the whole point of why we started these. It's the whole point of why I wanted to start them, because we're starting a new week, and the way you start your new week is the way you're going to be successful. If you don't start it off on the right foot, you're going to get to Friday and say, well, that week was a wash.

Does anybody feel that way right now? It's Sunday. Does anybody feel like last week was just a wash? You're not motivated. You let temptations overcome you. You ended up in the pantry at night. You had one too many pieces of candy. Something. You just didn't feel motivated this past week. Well, let's have all that stop right now. Don't even think about this past week. Don't think about the things you did or how you failed or messed up. That shit happens. Accept it. Be kind to yourself. Erase it now. I'm giving you permission to just erase it now.

Now let's really talk about setting a fucking routine for yourself. That's what's going to make you win. It's not about perfection. It's about consistency, and it's about consistently showing up for yourself on a daily basis. And with the time we're all facing right now, everybody's routine is so messed up, right?

I'm going to use myself as a prime example. I'm at my parents' house. I'm 30 years old, and I'm at my parents' house. I haven't lived at my parents' house since I was 18. I've got a sister and a brother who are taking up the entire house. I'm finding myself staying up until two o'clock in the morning because the house is so chaotic during the day. So I'm having to establish a new routine to help me be successful with what I want to accomplish with my goals, my workouts and my eating, getting in the kitchen when I need it. I find that when people are in bed sleeping, that's my opportune time to attack. So it's all about changing and adapting. That's what is most important, especially during this time.

Now, to all my babes who are still working, I appreciate you. I'm so thankful for all of you who are first responders, on the front lines or in grocery stores. You guys fucking rock. You are heroes. You're probably in the same routine, but with higher stress levels.

So another thing I want to talk about on this call is stress, because stress leads to cortisol rising, which leads to weight gain, which leads to not getting the results you want. And that's why routine is the most important thing: establishing and adapting your routine during this time.

One of the major things you want to do is assess your situation. That's what I had to do the other day. How can I optimize my time here? How can I successfully overcome the situation I'm in and still focus on the goals I have for myself? So I spent two or three days watching how my family interacts. My dad goes to work. My mom's at home. My sister and brother are just there. But around eight or nine o'clock, things start settling down. My brother is in his room all day playing Fortnite, and my sister goes downstairs to her room and starts playing Fortnite. And I'm like, this is my time, you guys. This is my time to shine. So I start banging out my meal prep. I start getting together the foods I want for the next day. I start doing some work. And I accomplish what I need to accomplish.

So the first thing I want to tell you is: assess your situation. See when the most opportune time is for you, especially if you have responsibilities.

That brings me to my second one: your responsibilities, and making sure they're taken care of, while at the same time not just focusing on everybody else. I have read so many check-in forms from my VIPs this week about work, so much work. They're telling me, I need to do this and this, and I'm not even on the clock. My kids are over here and I need to do this with them. I need to pack my husband's lunch. I've been hearing so many excuses. Now, I understand these responsibilities. I get it 110 percent. But there's also you. There are 24 hours in a day, and you can focus at least two of them on yourself.

And one day per week, you can focus on meal prepping so you don't have to worry about scrounging something up day to day. If you're doing that, you're failing right now. Do not put your meals together on a day-to-day basis. You know I've said this before. You want to set yourself up for success by meal prepping one or two times a week, having everything in bulk in your fridge, and then planning the night before, taking the time to sit down and plan out your meals and your macros.

And at that same time, this is where you say: okay, my responsibilities are the kids need to be here doing this, my husband needs this, I need to work from this time to this time. Where can I fit in time for myself?

So number one was assess your situation. When can you optimize your time at home while everybody else is doing their thing? Number two, once your responsibilities to your kids, your family, your husband and your work are taken care of, where can you fit in time for you? Where can you make time for yourself? Because if you don't, guess what? You're going to be stuck with the same results you're stuck with right now.

And you know what, guys? Everybody has the same 24 hours in the day. There are mothers out there killing it, getting amazing results, and they're taking care of four different children. Kudos to those babes. But let me tell you, there's no room for excuses in this. You all have the same 24 hours. It's just about optimizing and prioritizing your time.

The third thing I want to talk about is commitment. You deserve this. You deserve to establish a solid routine for yourself during this time, because when you do that, you can consistently show up for yourself. And when you can consistently show up for yourself, guess what? Everybody's going to be happy. You're going to be happy. Your family's going to be happy. It's not going to be all this yelling and nagging at each other in the house. Because if you can control and stay grounded within yourself, you can help ground everybody else.

This is why WarriorBabe is WarriorBabe. We are strong and confident. We are becoming strong, confident versions of ourselves. And in order to do that, you have to eliminate excuses and do the things you may not want to do. You have to develop the confidence to show up for yourself more. You have to take control. And everything I'm talking about right now is in your control.

You can assess how to optimize the situation at home better. You can come up with a better strategic plan for yourself. Number two, you can take care of your responsibilities, take care of your family, but also make time for yourself. That's in your control. And number three, your commitment. How bad do you want this? How bad do you want your goals? How bad do you want to stay on point with your goals during this time, so that when the world opens back up and the gyms open back up, you walk into the gym and you're not in the same boat you were in? You're actually five steps forward rather than five steps backward.

So the third one is commitment. How bad do you want it? You have to commit to yourself, and it's in your control. I'm done hearing excuses. I'm done hearing about the bullshit distractions getting in the way of people's goals because they're feeding into them. Distractions like not prioritizing your time the best you know you can, and then letting other small shit get in the way. And once other small shit gets in the way, you're putting your workouts on the back burner because you feel like this is more important or that is more important. But you can still control what's important in your world. You can learn how to best balance the responsibilities you have with the responsibility to take care of yourself.

So let that sink in, you guys. Number one was assessing the situation and optimizing your time better at home. Number two was making sure the responsibilities you have are taken care of, but also taking care of yourself: scheduling your workouts, making sure you get them done, figuring out your meal prep, making things in bulk rather than going day to day, figuring out your week ahead of time. And three, committing. Commit to it. How bad do you want it? Because once you want something really badly, let me tell you, no excuse is going to be able to get in the way.

I'm just kidding. No, that's hilarious. But I'm serious. If you really, really want something, your commitment to it will show up. With your desire to accomplish it, no excuse is going to be able to pull you down. If excuses pop up, you'll be aware of your excuse, and you'll be able to pull back from it and still continue to show up for yourself.

So let those three sink in. And then take what I'm saying, and don't just say, yeah, Nikkiey's right, she's a straight shooter with a no-BS, gloves-off approach to coaching, yeah, I'm hyped, and then not actually do anything about it and fall back into the same routine that's holding you back.

The most important thing, especially after all of these rally calls, is: how are you going to act? What's the next thing you're going to do? Did you meal prep today? If you didn't, you'd better get your ass to it. If you didn't work out yet, you'd better get your ass to it. If you didn't set your schedule for yourself, the kids need to be here at this time, my husband needs this, I need to work at this time, when can I work out? Do it. Taking 10 to 15 minutes to fucking do this shit is worth hours of success.

Once it's set in stone, it's up to you to follow through and commit to it. And if you don't follow through and commit to it, your goals are not big enough. Your wants and desires are not big enough. Your desire to tone and build muscle is not big enough. I'm saying this because I have set goals and I have adapted and changed everything, changed my whole world, to meet what I wanted to accomplish. So, food for thought: get out of your own way and start raising your goddamn standards.

I love you all. Go into this week strong. Show up for yourself and take a no-bullshit approach to the goals you want to accomplish. All right, everybody, great call. Let the babes know about it in the Facebook group. I'll chat with you guys later. Have a good week. See ya. Bye.
