Can years of weighing food really teach you to eyeball a portion? Nikkiey Stott puts it to the test. She guesses the weight of six foods: egg whites, mashed potatoes, Siggi's yogurt, strawberry fruit spread, chicken breast and oatmeal. She aims for within about 5 grams, or close on ounces, and the penalty for three misses is a blended fish head smoothie.
She lands 4 out of 6. She hits 150 grams of egg whites and 40 grams of oatmeal right on the dot, gets the mashed potatoes to 7.7 ounces and the fruit spread within range. She overshoots the yogurt and the chicken. The pattern is the real lesson. The foods she measures and eats every day are the ones she nails. The chicken breast missed because she normally eats 5 to 6 ounces, not 3.
Along the way she shows a simple way to measure sticky foods like jam or peanut butter using the tare button on your scale. Her point is that portion awareness is a skill. Once you build it by tracking your macros, you can eat intuitively with confidence instead of guessing.
Key takeaways
- Measuring the same foods every day ingrains those portions in your brain, so you eventually know what you need to eat without a scale.
- Eating the same foods regularly makes portions easier to eyeball: Nikkiey hit her daily egg whites (150 g) and oatmeal (40 g) exactly.
- Foods you don't usually portion at a given size are harder to guess. Nikkiey missed 3 ounces of chicken because she normally eats 5 to 6 ounces.
- To measure sticky foods like fruit spread or peanut butter, put the jar on the scale and tare it to zero. Take out your portion, and the negative number shows how much you removed.
- If you're going to miss on a portion, Nikkiey's view is that it's best to go over on your protein.
- Thick cuts of meat can fool your eye, so look at a portion from more than one angle before you commit.
- Nikkiey credits 7 to 8 years of tracking macros for her ability to look at food and know the portion size, which is what gives her confidence in eating intuitively.
Questions answered
Can tracking macros help you learn to eat intuitively?
Nikkiey says yes. After 7 to 8 years of tracking her macros, she can look at food and know the portion size. She says anyone can develop that skill with enough practice.
How do I measure peanut butter or jam accurately on a food scale?
Put the jar on the scale and tare it so it reads zero, then take out your portion. The negative number on the scale shows how much you removed, without dirtying a separate dish.
Why is it hard to eyeball some portions even after tracking for years?
Nikkiey nailed the foods she measures and eats every day, like egg whites and oatmeal. She missed the 3-ounce chicken breast because she usually eats 5 to 6 ounces, so that size wasn't ingrained.
Is it okay to go over on protein portions?
When her yogurt came in at about 219 grams instead of 200, Nikkiey said it's always best to go over on your protein.
How accurate can you get at guessing portion sizes?
In this challenge Nikkiey got 4 of 6 foods within her margin. Two were exact: 150 grams of egg whites and 40 grams of oatmeal.

Nikkiey: Today, we're turning up the heat with a challenge that's as risky as it is ridiculous. Through years of measuring and tracking macronutrients, I've developed a good sense of what portions look like, and I'm here to put that intuition to the test. I'm about to guess the weight of six different food items, aiming for the bullseye with a tiny plus or minus 5 gram margin, and give or take on the ounces. It's all about showing you that with enough practice, anyone can learn to eat intuitively, leaving the scales and the calculators behind.
This all sounds easy, right? Well, here's where it gets interesting. For every guess that misses the mark, I inch closer to a penalty that's as bizarre as it is gut-wrenching. If I bomb half of these guesses, hitting three strikes, I'll face the daunting penalty of blending a fish head and drinking it. Trust me, that's something you won't want to miss. But it's not all doom and gloom here. If I manage to nail three or four of these guesses, one lucky viewer will score a free four-month membership to our VIP community.
And trust me, you'll want in on this. We've got some extra juicy details about this prize, but you'll have to stick around until the end of this video to find out. So hit that like button, you guys. Subscribe if you haven't already, and let's get started on this challenge. Will I emerge victorious? Or will I be sipping on a fish head concoction? Let's dive in.
Okay, let's begin. Low-key, guys, I'm super nervous about this. I really don't want to have to drink a fish head. That sounds absolutely gross, but here we go. The first item that we are going to measure is... Gotta start off strong with something that I know, and I literally have once or twice a day. That is going to be egg whites.
So you guys know how this is all going down with measurement: we're putting the thing on the scale. We're going to turn the scale on. It's currently at zero. We're going to take it off. I'm going to try and eyeball the portion here. We're going to place it back on the scale, and that's going to be our confirmation of where I'm at with the number. Here we go. Egg whites, number one. By the way, I have to get 150 grams. That's the number for the egg whites right now. 150 grams of egg whites.
I'll go about it how I normally would on a regular day. I don't know how this feels internally. This is wrong. Oh! Let's go! 150 on the spot! Yes! I love starting off on a freaking dub. We are one for six. Okay, next up, let's go with the mashed potatoes.
I just want to get these suckers out of the way. I don't have mashed potatoes every single day. I'm going to go for eight ounces of mashed potatoes. Plate is off. Eight ounces of mashed potatoes. I think that's eight ounces. It looks like eight ounces. Okay, eight ounces.
Let's go! 7.7, baby. That's pretty dang close to eight ounces. So another dub. Let's go, baby!
Next up, we're going to do the Siggi's yogurt. This is something that I have every single day, so I'm banking that I get this right too. All right, so we're going to change it back to grams. We're going for 200 grams here. I think I'm either going to be on it or I'm going to be a little bit above it.
Okay, 200 grams. Dang! 218. I didn't need that last scoop. I knew I was going to be a little bit above it. 219. So, here we go. But you know what? It's always best to go over on your protein.
All right, next up, we're going to do something I don't have on a regular basis. This is my strawberry fruit spread. I'm going to show you guys a way that you can measure this, a similar way that you can measure peanut butter. What we're going for is the serving size, which is 19 grams, give or take the five. So how I would do this is I'm going to tare this now. At the end it should say negative something. I'm going to take it off. I'm going to go for intuitively measuring here. Okay, this looks promising. So this should be around negative 19. Negative 24.
Negative 24. So I'm off by 5 there, which means I am within the range of the parameters we discussed. So, let's go! That is another dub!
All right, next up, let's go plate. Let's do a chicken breast. The chicken breast, I'm going to do 3 ounces. And I can't tell you the last time, guys, that I had 3 ounces of a chicken breast. So, Godspeed.
Oh, we've got to change the unit. I'm at 3.8. Give or take, I said in the intro it would be plus or minus 5. Maybe 2.8 or 3.3 I would have given it. But I'm at 3.8. It just changed to 3.9. How quickly the vibe can drop. It's that meaty part. This is thick. That's meaty. Should have tried a different angle.
All right. We've got to bring up the morale again. Got to get something that I know. So let's do some oatmeal. The goal here is to get 40 grams. Okay. 40 grams. Yeah! Let's go. 40 on the dot, baby. 40 on the dot.
Okay. I don't think I said this at the beginning, but these are things that I measure every single day. And if you measure things every single day and you eat the same foods every single day, you're going to get these portions ingrained in your brain. And you're going to know what you need to be eating on a regular basis. So this just confirms it. I eat egg whites every day. I eat oatmeal every day. And that just slams in on the dot with another bullseye. I don't eat 3 ounces of chicken. I typically eat 5 or 6. So I should have gone with that. But it's all right.
All right, you guys. There we go. I got 4 out of 6 correct. So I'm so happy to report, and unfortunately I'm sure you guys would have enjoyed seeing me drink a fish head, I do not have to drink a fish head. And I am very excited about that. I'm also very excited that I get to gift an amazing watcher of this YouTube video a free 4-month membership to the WarriorBabe VIP community, meaning you get to work one-on-one with a coach for 4 months. But it's not a random selection.

I hope you guys enjoyed that video. It shows that through 7 to 8 years of tracking my macronutrients, I can really look at food and know what the portion size looks like. And it just solidifies my confidence in intuitively eating. So I hope that you guys gain some inspiration that you too can do that as well, once you develop the skill of tracking your macronutrients. See you guys in the next one. Peace out.
