In this video

When you start changing your habits, someone will tell you that you can't do it, or that this is just another fitness program you won't finish. In this video, Nikkiey Stott explains why those comments are never really about you. People speak from their own beliefs, past experiences and past failures, and project them onto you.

Nikkiey walks through why taking it personally means you're letting someone else's opinion decide what you believe about yourself. You create the picture of your body and your goals in your own mind, and you're the main character in it. You're only responsible for your own actions, so your daily choices should line up with what you want for yourself and your body.

She also covers how much your surroundings shape your energy and performance, from the people you talk to and follow on social media to the news, food and books you consume. Her advice: stand your ground when negativity comes your way, and actively protect your goals, your positivity and your inspiration.

Key takeaways

  • When someone says you won't or can't reach your goal, treat it as a statement about their beliefs, not about you.
  • If a negative comment hits hard, it may be a sign you don't fully believe you can do it yourself, so work on that belief.
  • Other people can't know your goals or what you want to accomplish, so their opinions come from their own past experiences.
  • Remember that you are the main character in the picture of your body and your goals, and everyone else is secondary.
  • You're only responsible for your own actions, so make sure your daily choices line up with what you want for your body.
  • When someone drops a negative opinion about your journey, stand your ground and speak up for what you want to accomplish.
  • Audit your surroundings, including the people you talk to, who you follow on social media, the news you consume, the food you eat and the books you read, because they all move you forward or hold you back.
  • Actively protect your goals and positivity by doing things that increase your inspiration and limiting time in toxic environments.

Questions answered

Why do people say I can't reach my fitness goals?

Nikkiey explains that what people say comes from their own beliefs and past experiences. When someone says you can't accomplish a goal, what they're really saying is that they couldn't, and they project that onto you.

How do I stop taking negative comments about my diet or workouts personally?

Recognize that nothing other people do is because of you, and they can't know your goals or what's in your mind. Trust yourself, choose whether to believe what someone says, and focus only on your own actions.

What if my family thinks I'll fail at another fitness program?

Nikkiey says not to take it personally, because that person is dealing with their own feelings and beliefs about failure and previous attempts. Whatever they think and feel is their problem, not yours.

How does my environment affect my fitness results?

According to Nikkiey, your surroundings shape your energy and influence your performance dramatically. The people you talk to, who you follow on social media, the news, food, books and where you live all either move you toward your goals or hold you back.

Whatever happens around you, don't take it personally. Someone might say to you along your journey, and I've heard this so many times, "You won't or can't accomplish that goal." It's not about you. It's about them. If you take it personally, then it's safe to say that you believe you can't accomplish the goal, and if that's the case, you are very easily influenced by someone else's opinion.

Nothing other people do is because of you. You have to understand it's because of themselves. All people live in their own mind. They are in a completely different world from the one you live in. When you take something personally or let others' opinions influence you, you make the assumption that they know what is going on in your own mind. We assume they know what our goals are, but they don't. There's no way they can know what your goals are. They don't see what you see. They don't feel what you want to accomplish.

What they say, what they do and the opinions they give are according to the beliefs going on in their own minds, from what they've experienced previously. So when someone says, "You won't or you can't accomplish that goal," what they're really saying is, "I won't or I can't accomplish the type of goal she is going for." But they project that onto you. Their point of view comes from all of the programming and all of the past beliefs they've received throughout their entire lifetime.

So if someone gives you their opinion and says, "You aren't going to succeed at yet another fitness program," and I've heard that so many times, especially from people who are supposed to be supportive in that person's life, don't take it personally. The truth is that this person is dealing with their own feelings, beliefs and opinions about failure and previous attempts at following a fitness program.

I've heard babes say, "My family or friends don't support me in what I want to accomplish or do." Don't take it personally. Whatever they think and feel is their problem and their problem alone. It is nothing personal, because they are dealing with it themselves, not with you. Others are going to have their own opinion according to their belief system. So nothing they think in relation to you is really about you. It is about them.

I need you to understand this: you create the entire picture of your body in your own mind. In that picture, you are the main character. Everybody else is secondary. It is your own vision of what you want to accomplish. And the way you see that picture is according to the beliefs you have made in your own life. So if you think you can, you will. If you don't think you can, you won't, and then you will be easily influenced by the flock of opinions that come your way along your own journey.

Your point of view is something personal to you. It is no one's truth but yours. You have to trust yourself and choose to believe or not believe what someone else says to you. As you practice not taking anything personally, you won't need to place your trust in what others say or do. You will only need to trust yourself to make the responsible choices that support what you want to accomplish with the vision you hold for yourself.

You are never responsible for the actions of others. You are only responsible for yourself alone. So the actions you take daily should always be in alignment with what you personally want to accomplish for yourself and your body. When you truly accept this, you won't be hurt by the careless comments people say or do, inside or outside of your fitness lifestyle. Remember that.

If you are ever in a situation like this moving forward, where a negative opinion about your journey gets dropped on you, stand your ground. Stand up for what you want and what you want to accomplish with your body and your goals.

Understand this, guys: your surroundings shape your energy, and your surroundings influence your performance dramatically. Everything outside you affects the way you think, feel and execute. Literally everything. Your personal surroundings include the people you have conversations with, the people you follow on social media, the news you consume, the food you eat, the books you read, the place where you live and so much more. It all works together to either move you forward toward your goals or hold you back.

And listen, you can't surround yourself with people who make you feel bad or spend your time in toxic environments. Make sure you stand your ground and do things that increase your inspiration. It sounds easy, but I know it's easier said than done with the environments some of us find ourselves in. But make sure to actively protect your aspirations, your goals and your positivity so that you generate the results you truly want for yourself.
