How do I cut back on cardio without panicking about gaining weight?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
Ease out gradually instead of quitting. On Ep. 294, Nikkiey suggests replacing one cardio session a week with strength training, then swapping a run for a walk. Watch your recovery, sleep, hunger, energy and mood rather than calories burned. You don't have to give up cardio. It just shouldn't be your main fat loss tool.

The full answer
Nikkiey gets why this feels scary. Cardio is familiar, emotionally rewarding and feels productive, and some women tell her they don't get the same high from lifting. Her answer is to ease out of it, not abandon it. She says you can find that same love for strength training, but it takes time, and for some women it may take six months.
Her step-by-step on Ep. 294:
- Replace one cardio session a week with strength training.
- Then add a walk instead of a run.
- Get curious about your recovery. How do you feel after your workouts?
- Most importantly, track your biofeedback: sleep, hunger, energy and mood.
If the fear is weight gain, consider what more cardio may already be doing. Nikkiey lists red flags that suggest the cardio-heavy approach isn't working: you work out five days a week but your body isn't changing, you panic if you skip a session, you obsessively track calories burned, you're tired or wired, sleeping poorly, always sore but not getting stronger, constantly craving carbs and sugar, or gaining weight despite doing more. She calls these signs of metabolic down regulation, not aging. She also notes that hormonal changes and other factors can be part of the picture, so if those signs sound familiar, it's worth talking with your doctor too.
Nikkiey is clear that cardio isn't evil. Her point is that using it as your primary fat loss tool is outdated. After your late 30s, she says, it can work against you if it isn't balanced with recovery, the right nutrition and strength training. At WarriorBabe, the goal is keeping the movement you love, whether that's running or CrossFit, inside a plan that works with your body. If doing more hasn't changed your results, the plan is the problem, not you.

Fat Loss After 40
How do I lose belly fat after 40?
Build muscle and fix your nutrition instead of adding crunches, cardio or cutting food further. Nikkiey explains belly fat can't be spot-reduced; it comes off through a calorie deficit across your whole body. Her priorities: progressive strength training, enough protein, sleep, stress management and less alcohol, plus patience, because the midsection often leans out last.

How many steps a day should I walk to lose fat?
Nikkiey recommends 8,000 to 12,000 steps a day for fat loss, and says it doesn't have to be exactly 10,000. If you're well below that now, build up gradually, adding 1,000 to 2,000 steps a week, instead of jumping straight to the target. Walking works best alongside strength training and the right nutrition.

Fat Loss After 40
Is too much cardio bad for women over 40?
Cardio itself isn't bad after 40, Nikkiey says, but too much of it becomes a problem when it's your main fat loss tool, especially without enough food, recovery and strength training. Then it can stress your body, cost you muscle and slow your metabolism. Use it as a supplement, not the star of the show.
